One other thing I don't believe has been mentioned here is a scheduling quirk that ruins a big plus of this bowl.
Usually the Hawaii Bowl is the only thing on and dominates ESPN's highlights for an entire day.
That won't be the case this year.
There is an entire slate of NFL games during the day Saturday because the league doesn't want everyone playing Christmas Day.
So the 'bonus' of being the only game in town is gone. Hawaii Bowl highlights won't show up until 45 minutes into SportsCenter.

Since that time, the exact measurements of the Purdue Big Bass Drum have been kept secret to preserve the mystique surrounding it."

Besides, SMU has the distinction of having BIG NAOMI, the world's longest sousaphone!

This is getting as fascinating as investigating the Shroud of Turin..

Did you ever find out who was the second gunman at the grassy knoll?

You love a good conspiracy theory, don't you?

Hawaii is a real slap in the face to SMU fans. Ticketcity with its $1.1m payout would be much more of a financial windfall for SMU than travelling to Hawaii for a 750k payout

I agree, but its what the players and coach (extremely) wants... Doesnt matter what the fans think. If we actually did play Hawaii (99% unlikely) the payout should be raised to 1.1 mil since its going to be sold out with Hawaii fans. Someone before said that TCB hasnt been able to payout the bowls.

Payouts do not matter. All the money is pooled and divided equally. And CUSA pays the team expenses for the trip.

good lord man, how many times to we have to go over this? the conference pays for the unused ticket allotment. WE, SMU, DOES NOT.

only expensive thing is sending the band.

Well, dear god let's NOT do what the players want at all.

But, the Hawaii Bowl could easily position themselves as the Rose Bowl for Mid Majors, I don't know why they don't. Take the WAC champion vs highest ranked champ of the MAC/Sun Belt/CUSA/MWC. Just Lock in the WAC maybe, or highest 2 out of all those conferences. This year they could have had TCU Boise if Houston goes Sugar Bowl. That's a BCS caliber matchup, well without 2 huge fanbases. Then SMU would have gotten stuck playing in Dallas vs a relatively crappy Big Ten Team also. Everybody would win especially SMU because then the team would "play to win every game". But they might lay down if they ever got to the Orange Bowl because it isn't in Hawaii of course.

June hears we're going to Hawaii if Houston wins regardless of what happens with Hawaii v BYU

Nice to know that the Hawaii media has better access to Jones than the DFW media. I guess there is such a thing as a long-distance relationship working out after all.

I wish the Hawaii Bowl was a BCS game then LSU wouldn't have home field advantage locked in every 4 years, hell NOBODY would. Matter of fact I think the BCS title game or whatever comes after, should be a permanent stay in Honolulu.

You're not serious, right? They have nothing close to a BCS caliber stadium

LSU has homefield advantage locked in, yeah, when they make the BCSNCG once every four years. That's pretty impressive. USC has it when it's at the Rose Bowl. Same for Miami/Florida/FSU at the Orange Bowl. Where do you want the BCS bowls? Cold Northern cities? No thanks. I'm sure the Super Bowl in freaking Indianapolis will be a blast this year

If there ever is another BCS bowl, it's gotta be at Jerryworld. Makes way to much sense

Thought you kept half and then the other half was pooled and divided up equally to the rest of the schools?

As a SMU fan, I promise not to feel offended if I get to go to Hawaii instead of Fair Park this year.
