Re: Many Grown-Ups on Ponyfans?
I agree IPP. But you can't deny it was handled badly from the top. The difference between the way JJ to SMU from Hawaii was handled vs SMU to ASU is pretty clear. JJ to SMU was kept quiet for over a month. Yeah, there was some suspicion about what was happening, but for the most part it was kept under wraps. I assume that was directed by June.
I'm willing to say he screwed up by not stressing to everyone that this be kept quiet, and others took the actual actions that have everyone riled up. But everything from assitants recruiting players to his agent being out on the radio promoting him to ASU on the day SMU to BE was being announced was a colossal disaster. And now Klemm is even out tweeting about which job he should take, even after all of this.
I'm mainly upset, as I think most on the board are, that things weren't kept on lockdown. Now there is a mess to clean up, and there didn't have to be.

Re: Many Grown-Ups on Ponyfans?
Apparently if you disagree with Mr. I write essays on a message board, you are a moron, kid, etc. Seriously the guy gets 2 million to beat teams in Crap USA. ASU was shocked about how much we were paying them and how much the really didnt want to pay the buyout. Everyone agrees that hes a coach who gets you from crap/death to OK... thats it. We are OK now, and wont continue to proceed any further. I will be surprise (unless a ridiculously easy schedule) to go 9-3... The fact you said he doesnt have to have loyalty is just silly. Thats like saying CEOs who build up a small public company to medium one doesnt need to be loyal to shareholders. It has the exact correlation, but according to your understanding he doesnt have to be loyal to SMU. Seriously???
Crowd attendance might suck and WE ALL UNDERSTAND THAT. We are the few in the stands... do we go and pout when our team makes stupid mistakes, hell no. We sat and watch navy (terrible team this year) win comfortably. But hell, if we dont break attendance records, then the coach isnt going to bother and get our players down and angry. Im not going to call you stupid for using that as a legit excuse to be "angry" but I really hope you consider how childish it is to act like that. Hes been here for 4 years, and our program has for the most part been dead for 25 years... Do you really expect people to just show up because you went to two bowl games (which lost to freaking army) got butt whipped by A&M (I believe is 6-6 and lost to a fresh-soph UT)... I mean thats not going to get the fans of America's team over to the Ford.
I dont remember nor care to argue every single point you wrote. Fortunately I believe everybody is entitled to their opinion and should be dog piled on for it. When you write out this stuff, leave you emotions off the table and actually think rationally and consider both sides of the argument. Reading thread titles and a few comments does not justify the threads as stupid.

I keep hearing this about the recruiting weekend so lets take a look at some possible scenarios,
all of which would hardly seem satisfactory to some furious myopic people on PonyFans.
Option 1: June meets ASU before recruiting weekend, but then if he takes the new job right before the big weekend some would be saying "wow he knew we had this huge recruiting weekend, he didnt care, just up and left us high and dry, and now none of the kids want to even come visit and see our campus...why didnt he at least wait a few days until after....what a jerk!"
Option 2: Wait until after the recruiting weekend knowing you are probably leaving and then some would be saying "wow I cant believe when he knew he was leaving and he still went thru with the recruiting weekend not really into it, what a jerk".
Option 3: Do what he did and be called a jerk. And we dont even know if he was in full control of the time frame. ASU may have said we need to make a decision now so we need to proceed immediately.
Exactly how would some of you complaining specifically about the big recruiting weekend have done it differently? If you were offered what you thought may be a better job and decided to enter into discussions about this potential new job...probably going to accept new job but obviously not a done deal....how would you have handled the SMU recruiting weekend?
+1

No I still believe jj owes us. Sure I'm happy our program is turning around, but newsflash, that is what he was hired, and expected, to do. I would hope he knew about SMU before he came here.....you know that it is a small private university and its football program was no longer the best around....b/c if he didn't it makes me think he came only vor the $. I'm tired of him making changes to MY school....colors, horses, etc. I feel he owes us to start coaching again and to respect SMU and her traditions.

I'd say we dont have all the details or enough to crucify June Jones over recruiting weekend.
This player Brown had no contact ever with ASU before he committed to ASU?
Are you claiming June Jones called this player & asked him to de-commit from SMU?
Who was recruiting Brown for SMU?
How do we know some asst didnt leak the info to Brown without June's knowledge?
Husker I am not saying you are wrong....I am just saying we dont have all the facts.
Thank you, Johnnie Cochran.

Re: Many Grown-Ups on Ponyfans?
The original post in this thread is very good. This whole situation is a sad commentary on human nature. A small but vocal group has made judgements based on limited facts and a whole lot of ugly assumptions.
Again, what is it about human nature that we must crucify?
I support June Jones not just because I'm a daisy tripping sunshiner. I support him because I believe human beings deserve better. Give me some fact-based material not based on ugly assumption, and I'll change my mind. I've yet to see any.
Until then, thank you June Jones. We truly do not deserve you.

Why don't you ask if all the coaches were at the coaches meeting when jj called them in off the recruiting trail to tell them they were going to asu?
Then ask yourself if anyone wasn't there what were they doing? Why couldnt they make it back? Or, why wouldn't they make it back?

IIP, you have made some good points in all this, there is so much we all don't really
know for sure, but I still don't believe June is tottally blameless, since he came to the
Hilltop I have not been a June lover, nor a June hater, I love S.M.U.

I agree with you on this having thought about it as well. Whether he interviewed before, during or after the weekend it was going to have a negative impact on the ability of SMU to land those recruits if it became public.
I suppose the thing I would have preferred is to make sure it stayed secret until it was signed. If you lose your coach you know you will have recruiting issues, it sucks to have it go public and hurt your recruiting when it did not have to.
Bingo! Keep it a secret until it is a done deal. If he leaves, you deal with the ramifications then. If he stays no one knew he was considering leaving, just listening to offers which every coach does. Now that he is staying he and SMU have to deal with an ugly situation that was played out in public. While it appears most of our recruits are loyal to SMU/JJ/Klemm, it is clear that one was put off by the whole situation. There is no telling how other recruits may react. I don't blame anyone for trying to improve their personal situations, but do so discretely and with class. This situation was aired out in public and with zero class (See Lee Steinberg and his son JJ's remarks).

I believe Jones owes everyone something, but the SMU community is the one to whom he owes the most. Things on the Hilltop are not nice and rosy and happy. In fact, word is there is a lot of anger throughout the entire campus.

He told us that even a whisper of the deal to get him out of Hawaii happened it was off. Why wasnt that the case with ASU? Had he kept it professional, and kept it quiet, we would have alot less issues, and besides hes got to be kicking himself, because had they kept it quiet he would be HC of ASU. Either way its ruined, and we fell out of the top 50 yet again.

I have seen you reference this a few times, but I somehow missed the original report. Where was this reported?
