Re: Official SMU/Tulsa Thread
I'm sorry Hoopman, but I am going to have to respectfully disagree - highly touted fine, but just not showing much to me. Cannen was a 4* right? -- how come freshman at every other school can play right at the get go?
I sure hope Bernardi can light it up b/c none of these kids can score. Rob is gone next year. Can Russell score?

hoopmanx - here's the thing, all these guys are highly touted supporting players but none are really a feature player. Rob needs to be our feature player this year and he hasn't really stepped into that roll. You know more about Bernardi and Mbargorba than I do, will they be the feature player type?
By feature player I mean someone that can take over a game if needed. Someone who can own the post or slash with the best of them.

Agh this game was frustrating.
I'm hoping Orsini was sitting courtside to ensure he had a good view of the mess & ensure he'd have no regrets about canning Doh.
And yes, we need a stud/difference maker.

Re: Official SMU/Tulsa Thread
this isn't a coaching issue as much as it is a talent issue...
We have one player who is "above average" in talent right now, and that is Nyuk. Cunningham, Smith, Manual, Jones will get there eventually, but aren't there yet; Jones is the closest to busting out.
Clink and Pats are players who wouldn't be getting minutes on a decent team. Their minutes are falling, but they are still getting time out there. Williams I am lumping into the "average" category, but it looks to me like he is going to fall behind Cunningham and Smith in the rotation pretty fast.
Last year we had 2 and sometimes 3 players performing at an above average level, so we won. If Jones makes the progression forward which it looks like he is on the cusp of making, he can be the second by the end of the season, and would make us a decent, average team in CUSA going into the tourney. If Manual, the next closest, makes the step forward, that takes us into an above average team to close the year out.
Next year, I think you have Cunningham, Smith, Manual, and Jones performing at an above average level, which will allow us to perform as one of the better teams in CUSA. If one of the frosh come in and play at a high level, it is a bonus, but not required for us to succeed.
Now, I think it would be fair to judge Doh on the fact that we don't have enough talent on the roster right now. But I think the performance of this team is about as expected coming into the year, around .500. Sure, you see success in the NCAA of Frosh coming in and having a big impact. But not on a team with only one good upperclassman player. The only time frosh have come in and carried the load were the great Michigan Fab Five teams or Florida team in the past. And as good as these kids are, they aren't at that level and shouldn't be expected to push us to a winning season as a group of young kids.
Judge Doh on a lack of talent, but this year isn't about coaching.

Re: Official SMU/Tulsa Thread
And how many years has he had to get talent? Also, his coaching is not BE caliber. Talent seems to go backward instead of forwards under Doh. I know some are making arguments to prolong this but..................

I'm pretty nervous about what the court will look like next year. I'm pretty sure the MUSTANGS on the baselines is an adidas font.

Watched the game today in SFO airport. Was very surprised to see SMU on tv there.

Re: Official SMU/Tulsa Thread
It IS a coaching and player issue. The players do not match this system. It strangles their ability to run the floor, create and crash. This system counters that.
I said that Doherty deserved to sink or swim with the 2011-12 season with the talent. It's taking on water.
The arrogant Ivy League Idiot still would like to trump up a National Coach of Year honor that occurred a long time ago -- those awards are nice but even coaches of the year get fired too.

Cotton and Frog a combined 3-16 shooting. That won't win many games
