Something tells me the folks at Ole Miss aren't in any hurry to do a favor for RGT

And he did not see that the conference mergers that were about to occur due to the OU Supreme Court case were going to be football centric.
This is completely wrong. Pye came to SMU to implement the Pye model, which he had NOT been in position (and was passed over for promotions that would have put him in position) to implement at Duke. It's not even a BB-FB split; Duke BB has long had academic and admissions approaches that were light years from anything Pye would have required of Duke BB if he had been able to do so.

On the main topic about the SEC and Duke, all the rumors I've heard from LSU friends is that it is Duke and UNC as a pair that have been approached. Duke alone makes no sense, but bringing that rivalry in as a pair would.

dont know what your source is but SEC has zero interest in Duke. They would be SEC's third choice in NC - only ahead of Wake. They add nothing to the SEC that they dont think they have already - except eyeballs in NC - in which case they would rather have NC or NCState. The SEC does not and will never give a hoot about academics. They are the only one honest about this whole thing.

UVA, NC and GT are going to Big 10. SEC will grab Fl st to keep it from Big 12 - maybe Clemson. Big 12 will grab NC state and Miami - maybe Duke.

we then have a shot of teaming up with the also rans -

Unless the SEC gets a waiver from FL and SC, they won't add FSU and Clemson. They have a no second team from any state rule. The SEC realized that having two SEC schools in a state like MSU/Ole Miss, Vandy/TU, and UA/AU didn't increase TV revenues marketly. I think their two criteria for additions are: (1) New TV markets or (2) substantial competition upgrade. FSU/Clemson do not add TV markets and are a push to substantial competition upgrade. If hurting the Big XII is one of their goals only then would those two be targets. They can harm the Big XII a lot more by taking OU/KU if the opportunity arises.

its not huring the Big 12 that will be why they abandon that rule - it is to protect their own turf from the big 12. They will give up miami to the big 12 but not Fl state.

The SEC was open to adding FSU - there is more than enough room in FL for a second school but UF was absolutely opposed to it for any purpose. Conversely, So Carolina was open to letting in Clemson, but apparently one school in that state is enough for the rest of the conference.

the operative word ...."was"

everything is changing. if it comes down to watching big 12 grab second best florida team for football, SEC will grab them instead.

SEC is hoping for Duke and UNC. Best football, basketball and baseball conference unquestionably. GT and UVA to Big 10 with Clemson and FSU to Big 12.
