Don't settle for mediocrity SMU graduate. LB is is going for a national championship and not just trying to make it to the NCAA tournament. Football should be striving to win the conference and get to BCS bowl. We now know it can be done with the right staff. Just saying.

i am very excited, but will reserve my celebration for when it happens. Too many charlie brown football experiences in SMU sports. Hopefully we can all start training ourselves to be real fans again soon.

A rising tide raises all boats! Remember Baylor after the men's basketball scandal--they had nothing and the doormat of the Big 12? It all began with women's basketball, then men 's then RGIII. Now they are picked near the top this fall.

I agree that the goal is to win a national championship in basketball, but realistically I think no program can expect to contend for a national title every season. Just look at Kentucky last season. Thus my expectation of perennial sweet sixteen. I expect better from football, but if we have one top ten revenue program and can at least make it to a bowl game every season in football I will take it. Not saying I don't want a BCS bowl game.

We are building to win a national championship whether we do it or not. And we can be highly competitive perennially like Duke and Kansas. We need both football and basketball to be successful to make it to a power 5 group conference. Football just needs to get an aggressive staff because 6 or 7 win season are not going to win conference championships. Standards should be the same in both now that we see recruiting can be done well. I know you like June but don't settle for 6 or 7 win regular seasons because you will generally get what you settle for. If June steps it up fine but if not we can't be stagnant. Make no mistake in that football will determine who goes where in the next phase of realignment not basketball.

In that case we are arguing about semantics. I want SMU to contend for a conference championship every season in football with a minor bowl being the minimum. Going forward my expectation for basketball is to actually be in the sweet sixteen every season. Anything less would be a catastrophic failure. The goal is a national championship nonetheless. I have higher expectations in basketball because we can actually have a respectable crowd for basketball. In football we will never attract an SEC or Big Ten type of crowd even if we sign the top 25 recruits in the country.

We did not have good crowds for basketball either last year. Duke nor Kansas make it to the sweet sixteen every year (and it is not a catastrophic failure) so those would be unrealistic perennial expectations. Let's get to a sweet 16 first. 3 years from now we should be able to make a run but the next 3 we will still be building for a run. As for football we should be at the point where minor bowls are viewed as failure to win a conference championship and not a minimum goal imo. After 6 year of football recruiting not making it to a bowl game should be consider a catastrophic failure (I do think we go to a bowl this year). Let's not put all the pressure on the basketball team to drive the ship for getting to a better conference and expect less from the football team. Both can do it I believe.

I hear what you are saying 86. I just read this quote from a poster on anther board about the hoops team and it made sense.

"Very exciting! Every SMU fan should have excitement oozing from his/her ears. This could have a major impact on SMU's momentum for years to come. Just be fair to the guy and have some realistic expectations for a freshman (even for a talented one)."

And remember we are probably only getting Mudiay for one year but we can build in recruiting off of his commitment if he comes to SMU.
