I'd like to "eliminate" the Longhorn band.

The traditions carried forward by our band are great, and what makes college football special. The issue is how to update some of the music they play so that they are somewhat relevant and more fun. Some of the charts the band people love are not worth keeping. Toss over the rainbow for good. There are many great songs that can be added in that fit our style. The band needs to be less stubborn or someone is going to make changes they don't want.

We might be the only team in the NCAA to play Jai-Ho and Somewhere Over the Rainbow though...just saying...wish we had more drum cadence throughout the game

Quite a few bands played Jai-Ho a few years ago. It's not like that's an old song...probably about 5 years old now.

Let me ask you this: who in the stands does Jai-Ho appeal to? It's a good song...and played well BTW but you can't see the WFT reaction of the crowd?

I don't know that it appeals to anyone anymore, but back a few years ago (2-3 maybe?), I saw the student section dancing to it. It only works if people in the crowd have seen the movie, for sure

As much as I hate to say it, I feel like the music needs some major revamping. It's not that those older tunes like Rainbow don't have a place(homecoming or post game concert, for example) but for an opening show I thought the show was just throwing something against the wall and hoping it'd stick. I appreciate the efforts of the youngsters out there and this isn't about them but that show "theme" felt very forced to me. Not saying that the band has to resort to playing Justin Beiber or anything but there has to be more integration of tunes that the younger portion of the stadium can "groove" to rather than esoteric stuff like Jai-Ho that had its place 4-5 years ago.

The reality is that the band needs a major infusion of funds. The new band hall is the first step. Now we just need to find a way to offer scholarships that will help us with recruiting more horn players(we don't need more drummers, at least for now) that we lose out on because they can't afford the cost. The band will never be the size of a state school band and will never get any real help from those in the music school, so they'll always rely on the kids that are willing to do it for the scholarships. Most of the kids that did HS band are going to be middle class kids that are getting squeezed out of attending institutions like SMU because of the rising costs. So the band works with what's handed to them. Oh yeah, it wouldn't hurt to have a competitive football program either. Getting to a couple of bowls has helped some but it isn't enough.

Basketball will really help in this regard.

First time logging on to PF since the game....and I should have known something random like this would be the top thread.
I would comment on the band, but I was stuck in a concessions line for more than 30 mins, so I can't. And that and the actual football game bothered me more after the game.

Here is an idea for the band, and no I will not email anyone because I am not one to get involved with the band arguments. But I thought this sounded cool.

Florida A&M against Miss Valley State. As the first quarter ended the band ran onto the field and played a quick song and ran off. Could not be accomplished with a large bands so would be perfect for us. Have the band run onto the field, play a few rounds of Peruna or the fight song, and run off. Better than the mini Mustangs, probably would arouse the crowd, and be a little unique even though being copied from another school.

You'd need much easier access to the field than what our band has to do that
