SMU is probably not a football step up from Fresno State, but $2MM is a step up from $700,000.

Right, but are the powers that be willing to pay Tim Deruyter $2MM a year?

Do not be surprised if SMU doesn't pay anywhere close to $2MM per year for their next head football coach.

Do you think Turner has given up on being P5?

Might not be the worst idea. Plenty of coaches out there right now doing a much better job on the field and in recruiting than JJ that could be had for substantially less than his current salary.

What we are willing to pay will be a good indicator of how serious RGT and the CofC are about us being a major player or just a mediocre second tier school.

After all, it doesn't cost more to go first class- you just can't go as far.

nor is Muschamp as good a coach as U.M. Hopefully we aspire to improve over JJ, not take a step down.

Why not? If our AD and coach have already admitted that we can't handle 3 P5 opponents in a season, how could we possibly cope with 8?

I thought it would be interesting to look at what other AAC coaches are making-
Louisville - $3.7MM
Cincinnati - $2MM
South Florida - $2MM
UCF - $1.5MM
Temple - $1.2MM
Houston - $1MM
Memphis - $925,000
Rutgers - $800,000
U-Conn - $450,000 (Interim Coach)

Rutgers is getting a deal

IIRC their coach moved up from an asst. so he may not be getting paid 'market' price. I wonder what they would have had to pay if they had gone out and recruited a top level coach.

The athletic department doesn't pay a dime for JJ now, so if the CoC doesn't want to pay for a replacement, even a bargain-rack coach trying to jump from a high school would mean an increase in the athletic budget. If the CoC doesn't want JJ pushed out, it would be shocking if the administration did it, knowing that it would mean a major financial commitment for the next guy, even if his salary is lower than JJ's.

Therefore, I don't expect a change, regardless of record. I have mixed emotions about whether a change should be made, but I'd be surprised if it happens.

What really matters is what the CoC thinks...if they're willing to buyout June for 2014 and pay for a new coach, I'd hope Rick Hart would go along with that.
