Maybe this OOC schedule was left in tact to make sure Jones retires. : )
Red, sometimes you get so strong on the fire them all kick that you do not pay attention. Jones was given one primary goal and that was to get us into a BCS conference. To do that you would assume we would have to be competitive. But his goal was not to play specific teams, it was to get into a conference with a big money return. Of course this would have to be in concert with RGT and Orsini at the time. But where the shortfall occurred was not being competitive enough to upgrade us as the conferences moved.redpony wrote:mrydel- so you are saying that he was not expected to make us competitive with our former companions- tcwho, tt, a&m, baylor etc.
Sorry but I disagree- this was also part of the 'bargain' IMO. You can't be BCS if you can't play with the 'big boys'.
...for one year.mrydel wrote:So I agree with you in concept that we should have strived to be competitive with our neighbors, but when he was hired he was told his goal was to get us into a BCS conference and he did accomplish that. It just turned out to be a very bad one.
That's where we disagree- we could have very well been left in the current C-USA instead of making the jump to the AAC without June taking us to four bowl games. I'll give June credit there- he made us a somewhat respectable football program after being one of the worst in FBS for 20+ yearsmrydel wrote:And what we are actually left with is pretty well right where we were when he came from a conference standpoint.
How so? We weren't getting into the Big 12 over TCU. They'd built up a substantial fanbase over the past decade before JJ came to SMU.mrydel wrote: yes, it could have been worse. I also believe with right effort and recruiting it could have been better.
Whew. Thank goodness I'm forgiven. I was very worried there for a second.East Coast Mustang wrote:Ojai just had an FTHP moment. They were supposed to come here this year remember?

If you want to disagree with what I said, make a counterpoint.PonySnob wrote:Is that you June?East Coast Mustang wrote:That's where we disagree- we could have very well been left in the current C-USA instead of making the jump to the AAC without June taking us to four bowl games. Remember - it's only PRE-SEASON!1983 Cotton Bowl wrote:Nice, we'll be breaking in a new QB too. Should be a terrific day for SMU football. I'm almost getting to the point where I'm not even going to tune in until conference play begins. These OOC beat downs are horrible. And I suppose the athletic department will charge $100 per seat. No thanks.
