+1. jj has no desire to get out on the road and do what is required to recruit top level players. In addition, his attitude carries over to the rest of the staff.

Now that we are not in a bowl game, June and his staff can focus 100% on hitting up these recruits we are targeting at their houses/schools! Closers don't call...they get on your face until you sign.stc9 wrote:I don't disagree with you. But allow me to summarize the beef PF posters have with JJ's recruiting. Mack Brown got on an airplane to go to FLA. Nick Saban got on an airplane to go to Texas and other places. JJ said in his interview with Pony Pride that he and his staff were going to call his current commits. Can you see the difference in effort?feelthehorsepower wrote:Well, we are the other school in the DFW are apart from TCU and we can pitch to these kids to stay here instead of leaving for TTU, Baylor. There is a lot of potential in those kids that don't get the big Bama, LSU, Texas offers...stc9 wrote:Last year, before the game they used SMU to end their losing streak, their HC made a comment (paraphrasing), "Right now, LSU is the marquee program in the state. Still, LSU can only take 25 or so kids a year. There is a lot of athletic talent in Louisiana. I am going to out fight everyone else to make sure they stay here." looks like that is what he is doing.
Yes, there is value in the kids that don't receive big name offers. The reason the kids with big time offers are so highly sought, they are the most talented football players. In a perfect world, these "Diamonds in the Rough (DIR)" recruits are the guys you round out your roster with - not the building blocks of your roster. JJ might be a fantastic salesman for SMU when he is in a family's living room (I don't know). He needs to actually go to someone's living room to make his pitch. It is a competitive business. Face time, "coach love" counts.
For example, Saban was on 60 minutes before the season. He complained about playing in the National Championship game because it took a week away from recruiting. JJ is going to call his current commits. If you were 17 or 18 what would impress you more? A phone call or a personal visit from Mack Brown/Nick Saban/Les Miles/The Steaming Pile...etc.

I was interested to see that Mack a Brown was meeting with commits this week. A lot of things point to changes needed in the head coach involvement in recruiting. Our assistants are out all the time, but June needs to show more involvement I think.

Not trying to be confrontational with you but how do you know that the assistants are out all the time?Mustangsabu wrote:I was interested to see that Mack a Brown was meeting with commits this week. Elite as in Football I take it? Miami is NOT an elite Academic school. Hardly. Yes, very elite in football.smusportspage wrote:The "elite private schools" that come to mind are Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Notre Dame, University of Miami....every one of them is in a P5 conference. Makes their road tones easier. Not disagreeing with what you are getting at. Can you think of an elite private school out there that is competing that is not in a P5 conference? There are probably some, just can't think of them off the top of my head.
Miami has come up in the world of academics because of Football. In the early eighties they were "ranked" lower than SMU in terms of both faculty and quality of students. Yes, times have changed and Miami is ranked higher than SMU academically but not by much so lumping them in with Vanderbilt, Duke, ND and Stanford is laughable. Miami, SMU, Tulane, Syracuse, BYU etc would be a more apt category to put Miami in. All very good private institutions that are not "elite".
By the way; love the U in football. Always hoping they can find a way back to the top.

so the Monday meeting with JJ was scheduled for last Monday win or lose with UFC. It was canceled and is now this Monday morning.
IMO that sounds like he wanted to either wrap the season up or give a "pump up" speech about the bowl. Then something happened...could have been he had to go a doctors appointment could have been we are getting rid of him haha.

Good point. All the service academies are academically elite institutions. Unfortunately, many people do not realize this.blackoutpony wrote:
Also the service academies. Yes, I know they're sort of in a different category, but they are elite academic institutions.

No problem. I have just heard that to be the case from sources that I trust. I don't believe this is a time on the trail issue, it is a selection of prospects and HC involvement issue.Rebel10 wrote:Not trying to be confrontational withMustangsabu wrote:I was interested to see that Mack a Brown was meeting with commits this week. Fixable issues. June needs to hustle and skip his Hawaii vacation if he wants to keep working here at SMU. Simple: If we get blown out by Baylor, TCU, Texas A&M, UNT, Houston, Cincinnati, UCF and lose to Tulane...and if his recruiting for 2015 is horrible...he's fired. FIRED!Mustangsabu wrote:No problem.
