I don't understand the outrage......
Once we learned JJ had $2 mil due in 2014 then we knew he was coming back. The COC doesn't have the firepower to eat that and hire a new coach - which if he is a Chad Morris quality guy will cost $2 mil. Not to mention better assistance.
I don't blame the COC, I'd be hard pressed to throw $2 mill down a rat hole to make a change now.
As far as Hart, c'mon guys - no AD has sole discretion over a hire. The big money boosters will always have a say - as they should. Hart has done an excellent job improving the game day experience, in stadium experience, and the ticket office is a cast improvement . Orsini is the one who recommended JJ get extended and he resisted LB.
The COC is why we have a pulse. If not for them then we are a corpse. No Ford Stadium, still in CUSA, no Moody renovation, no LB ( who do you think provides for the private plane travel, and a big chunk of LB salary). It could be so much worse.
If you don't see JJ change assistants or an IPF announced then you can assume the extension is in name only. SMU has the cajoles to make a change - witness Orsini being fired for cause. Public lynching that only happen if it is supported by the big donors.
Frankly, I'm happy we have a group of men who care so much about our athletic program to give so generously. They are successful business men who aren't blind, see the big picture and are willing to make a decision.
I'm hopeful they are keeping their powder dry in order to have funding to bring in a stud HC and more importantly stud assistants that will take us to the next level.

3-YR extension?!
There's got to be another reason why a school would give a coach a contract extension who doesn't want to be there in the first place?
Like ...
Are they intentionally trying to dismantle the football program???!!!
Even a blind man & a person who can ready would know that the crowds will be lower next year!
What gives?

Plus its way more than 2 Million.
More like 2 Million x 1.5 years plus at least 1-2 million for remaining terms of assistants plus a huge investment in new coach and assistants

Stal. - please clarify your #s. June had 1 yr at 2 mil. how do you calculate 2.5. Also, IIRC his assts. were y-t-y. So their agmts should expire in a few days. Idea- why not just let him do all the coaching and not have any assts? think of all the $ that would save.

Hart said that the IPF would be slated for 2015. I think this contract is pro SMU and not pro Jones like the other one was. The last contract June did not have any requirements and this one I think he does. Also Suan, Hill, and Morrison might be gone.

Why do you believe this pro SMU?

Because it may have a way to easily buyout Jones next year as opposed to this year as well as possibly having requirements.

When you consider who all is part of the CoC I'm just not convinced that they are really all that concerned about the financial aspect of it. Some of these guys are worth enough that $1 million could be considered "walking around money".
Part of me wonders whether or not the fans, administration, and CoC are very much out of synch like Texas was for the past few years where it was rumored that guys like Hicks and McCombs were pretty much happy with everything because they knew they had Dodds and Brown in their back pockets while everyone else was p*ssed off that they weren't winning championships.
While it is nice to have big donors step up like the CoC has that kind of generosity almost never comes without strings... and men like that usually want one thing in return: Control.

Maybe that is why he didn't sign it right away. He wanted to see if anybody else wanted him first. I hope you're right. An extension that comes with pro SMU objectives and an easy way out if those objectives aren't met is about the best we can hope for now.

I think so.
It's just unfortunate that there's no good way to contractually force Jones to actually get off his butt and recruit.
I'd have absolutely no problem with him staying as long as he wanted if he would just
RECRUIT and stop publicly making excuses about why he doesn't.
There was a lot of talk about a week ago about Lane Kiffin going to Tuscaloosa to work with Saban a bit... Frankly, I'd love to send Jones to Oxford, MS to learn a bit about recruiting from Hugh Freeze.
