UT did go 9-4 during mack's final season...correct? It may have been time for Mack to go but I think there are a lot worse options.

No 8-5. 9-4 was 2012. 9 wins is a good number though.

Let's compare 9 wins to Mack's predecessors.

Mack Brown 98-13 (seasons with 9 or more wins: 13 out of 16)

Prior to Mack you have:
John Mackovic 92-97 (seasons with 9 or more wins: 1 out of 6)

David McWilliams 87-91 (seasons with 9 or more wins: 1 out of 5)

Fred Akers 77-86 (seasons with 9 or more wins: 6 out of 10)

Darrell Royal 57-76 (seasons with 9 or more wins: 10 out of 20)

Hmmm....

I think you can give Royal a break since most if not all of his years they only played 10 games. Not sure about Akers. You do need to factor in number of games played.

Obviously Mack let this be leaked (the news). Maybe its leverage for a job with a bigger program. Who knows. Good for SMU regardless. Keeps the HC opening in the spotlight.

Bottom line, the only recent (if that term is used liberally) UT coach that can compare to Mack is DKR. If that is the standard, Mack did just fine.

It's all just speculation but the Mack Brown rumor isn't going away. If anything it's gaining steam. Both major sports radio stations in Dallas (ESPN and Ticket) continue to mention the rumor. Norm has Rick Gosselin on every Tuesday. Last week they brought this up and both quickly dismissed it saying it won't happen. This week as they ended their segment Norm tease next week by saying we are going to dig deeper into the SMU and Mack Brown situation. There's A LOT going on the DFW sports world right now (Cowboys, Mavs, Stars, TCU upset, Texas/OU, Cowboys) and for them to focus on SMU/Mack Brown after completely dismissing it previously means someone who knows is telling them this has legs.

Or they're just trying to get some listens from SMU and UT fans. I'm sure there's some truth to the rumor that SMU reached out to Brown, though.

The Ticket could less about the potential 50 extra listeners they might get by talking SMU. That station has dominated M25-54 in Dallas for 15 years.

If Mack Brown was such a great coach at UT why isn't he still coaching there?

You got me curious, and since I'm at the office anyway, I broke out the excel.

Instead of 9 wins, let's look at years with a 75% or greater win rate.

Mack Brown 98-13 (seasons with 75% or more wins: 11 out of 16)

John Mackovic 92-97 (seasons with 75% or more wins: 1 out of 6)

David McWilliams 87-91 (seasons with 75% or more wins: 1 out of 5)

Fred Akers 77-86 (seasons with 75% or more wins: 7 out of 10)

Darrell Royal 57-76 (seasons with 75% or more wins: 10 out of 20)

So if you rank the UT coaches since DR in order of % of seasons with 75% or more wins:

Fred Akers 70%
Mack Brown 69%
Darrell Royal 53%
David McWilliams 20%
John Mackovic 17%

If you look purely at total win % over the entire career at UT, you get this order:

Mack Brown 77%
Darrell Royal 76%
Fred Akers 75%
John Mackovic 59%
David McWilliams 54%

Mack is still up there. I don't want him. I prefer Chad Morris. Ask CenTxPony or blackoutpony

Ha! Good job. I always laugh at people that demonize Mack Brown who is a genuinely good man when Fred Akers was a real turd. BTW though Mack Brown coached in a tougher league-probably 2nd best during his tenure
