Not mocking at all, just sayine his skill set should have no bearing. Im saying that passing in a class should be a clear cut issue. There is a standard that should be met, if not there are consequences. Whether he should have been enrolled in said class is a separate issue.

We brought him here to play basketball to help SMU get on the map so the school could get more notoriety and money right?

I didn't bring him to SMU at all.

Good way to avoid the subject. You know what I meant.

This conversation should head directly to the "waste of time" bucket - which is overflowing by the way.

Ok, I feel that if a student can do the work at some level they shouldn't be in college. They have other options. Im not saying that all athletes need to be Rhodes scholars. But he has been here 5 semesters and is still allegedly reading at a 7th grade level? Either we aren't helping him (probably not true) or he isn't trying. Making a bunch of C's shouldn't be too much to expect, particularly with all the advantages provided to the athletes.

Fellas he is passing his classes just has not meet the minimum GPA. That's the issue from my understanding.

Actually my argument would be, if possible, to have a major available for those that have a future in something that would out earn in one year more than most graduates will earn in a lifetime, Certain athletes that have proven quality are allowed to have insurance policies to pay them millions in the event of a career ending injury their last year of college should they opt not to come out early. Why could there not be a system to determine a major for those that have proven ability to take them to the next level. Money management. Lifestyle. Education in areas that have been proven to be downfalls to young athletes that get too much too soon. It should not be available to all. People do not get into law school without passing the LSATs and then the bar. People need degrees in education to be teachers. We do not have specific degrees for the exceptional athletes and I believe if we did there would be much fewer hard luck stories of young men going down the wrong paths after being handed millions of dollars.

Markus could be one that shouldn't be in college anyway. But they got him here. C's could be lot to ask depending on your educational background and the class, regardless of the help. I heard that he is trying. We'll see, either way I think you would probably agree that SMU has gotten good usage out of him right?

I totally agree. I have advocated for a long time that the NFL and NBA should require their athletes to attend special classes (funded by the league) on money management and post career lifestyles.
Your idea would simply move those classes to the university prior to their professional careers.
Great idea.

I thought that's what the "sports management" degree was. Maybe not as specific or concentrated on the right areas given this scenario.

ojai- we had different impressions of what that degree entailed so I looked it up. here is what was on the internet;
"Sports management degrees provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills centered on finance, management, marketing and law pertaining to the organizations in the sports industry. The coursework in sports management degree programs typically prepare students for careers with amateur, collegiate and professional sports organizations. These students are able to capitalize on several different types of sport related opportunities after graduating from a sports management program. "
So, it deals with actually being associated with/or working in a sports organization.

It is possible the sports management degree could work. This was not available in my time so I am not fully aware of how it works and if it benefits a potential player. If it does, that is great and it should be utilized to the fullest extent.

I can tell from your posts that you know absolutely nothing of present intercollegiate athletics and the types of "students" that colleges will accept in order to make millions of dollars in profit off of that individual athlete for said institution.
At SMU, they may get tutors, but we have heard from many on this board that we are not providing enough resources to athletes. We likely do not offer as many "easy A" courses as most state schools and many other privates. The burdens on the time of these athletes are ridiculous - practice, travel, games, game planning, class, homework, etc.
The day is coming where not only will all P5 college athletes be paid, but at some point they will no longer even have to be students at the university. That is really the next logical step.
MK plays basketball at SMU. Period. That is why he was accepted into the school. If he couldn't play BB, he would not have been admited. Yet now we are going to hold him back from his future profession (and the entire reason he came to SMU) in order for him to meet our stupid GPA requirements?
You do realize how incredibly stupid that is, right??

Actually I know exactly the kind of students that get admitted. I've tutored/taught them at state schools. Sure SMU is keeping mk from making money, jut like we did with Mudiay and the other pg last year, oh we're not. If he reads at a 7th grade level he doesn't belong in college. When we move to a pro college system then fine they can play for college teams.
