If we were regularly competitive, we'd have value to someone being in the heart of Dallas. We were sort of heading in that direction and the wheels came off with the lack of recruiting. If we had recruited and maintained, we certainly would have continued to build a fan base. Now there were big issues with the program's head (aside from recruiting) that did not exactly build community excitement, but as the basketball program proved, there can be good community feeling and decent recruiting on the hilltop. We just need to make the right hire, and put some money where our mouth is. In the AAC, if we can be a consistent winner in conference not get blown out in every stinking non-conference matchup, we'd bring value.

Heart of dallas blah blah. How many power 5 teams are in a top10 city? Chicago, philly, nyc, Houston, phoenix. Big city not equal big college sports.

exactly-basically talking about USC and only sometimes Miami. Both have fan base who identified with a specific region of a very rich recruiting goldmine. Southern California and South Florida. That's what Russ Potts, Brad Thomas, Ron Meyer, Mustang Mania and Texas Stadium did-identify SMU as the representative of Big D in an era where the Dallas TV show and the Dallas Cowboys captured the imagination of the Country. SMU was the personification of J.R Ewing on Dallas and SMU played its games in Texas Stadium-home to America's Team. How do we do that again in an era where we are playing teams that no one in Dallas cares about? Mustang Mania saturated the market with a unique SMU identity . Hard to convey unless you lived through it. I think the first step is to realize that we need to draw on the synergy that comes from a primary focus on selling and recruiting from, and based on Big D. Note: that's what Larry Brown was doing last season by identifying "Personalities in the Crowd" last year (that would probably preclude a ukulele singer from Honolulu singing tiny bubbles at halftime, Hawaiian leis and mystical Hawaiian decals on helmets)

OK, I'm really confused, what do leis & ukuleles possibly have to do with promoting Dallas & SMU?

Those aren't top 10 markets. Phoenix is 14th and Austin is 35th.

So I throw an easy soft pitch down the middle of the plate & nobody wants to hit it out of the ballpark?

That would be rather difficult for him to do... Right now I'm not entirely sure we'd let him in the front door.

Could you maybe eliminate the emoticons? That would chase off at least some of the riff raff.
