They fired this guy out of spite because they were pissed they got drilled on homecoming.

That makes the job worse, IMO. They gained nothing by doing this after the game and not waiting until they were eliminated from bowl contention. This shows they have no plan.

You are crazy to take that job unless you get a serious guarantee on a long term deal.

No reason UNT shouldn't compete for the CUSA title every year. New stadium and located in the Metroplex. Same with us and the AAC. We made the right hire, I'll be interested to see who UNT gets. The right guy could do well there and use it as a springboard to a better job in a hurry

Nothing has proven to be more irrelevant to football success than a new stadium.

Any school can be successful or awful. Look at Boise, garbage school in a horrible location with grizzly bear coeds. UNT will suck for the same reason SMU has sucked for so long - lack of plan, will, and support from the school administration.

McCarney has been there for awhile. Sorry but if in year 5 you are 0-5, have lost every game by at least 14 points and got drilled by an fcs team on homecoming by 59 points you're gone. 2013 was awhile ago-he doesn't have security from their 9-3 after following it up with a losing season and a horrendous start to another. He's not in his first or second year, that entire roster is his recruits so the complete ineptitude of said roster is on him and as such he doesn't deserve to have a job. He has had plenty of time and the team is now arguably in worse shape than he found it in.

I disagree with your statement about them gaining nothing- there is now extra weeks/months of publicity for the job opening. If any coach shies away from a school because they fired the incumbent for the aforementioned mess then he isn't a guy that should be a coach anywhere, really. This also shows that they are serious about football and won't accept mediocre and below. What kind of message does it send out keeping on a coach that is 0-5, no momentum in recruiting, and got blasted by psu?that you're a pushover that isn't willing to compete is what I'd say.

UNT fires Dan McCarney

And as a potential coach, I say I am a coordinator at a P5 school (and they will hire a coordinator) and I make low/mid six figures now. You have fired the last 2 guys after 4 years each and you fired the last guy in the locker room before the season was half over. You are in Conference USA, which will likely never play in the gang of 5's premium bowl spot. What the F are your expectations and are you willing to show any patience at all?

What are you defining as patience? He had four years and midway through his last season things were looking worse Than before. He had plenty of time to assemble his roster and he failed.

There is a difference between. A rebuilding year and needing a complete rebuild- in the former, the talent is on the roster but it is just going to take a year or so for it to develop and mature into its potential. He is the latter in this instance

I am not saying you don't fire the guy at the end of the year or the Monday after loss #7. I am saying firing a guy after a home game before the season is half over is bad form/bush league and won't be looked on favorably by potential candidates.

There is no way the AD planned on firing McCarney before the game, which means sometime over the course of the next 4 hours, a decision was made. That decision was partially based on emotion. And that is a giant red flag for any candidate.

The best guy for the job is actually available, only they are too stupid to call him because they were too stupid to keep him in the first place.

The coach who took them to four straight conference championships and their best record in 40 years Darrell Dickey, is now the OC at Memphis, who is 5-0 and doing it with a hit-and-miss defense. He knows Texas, knows the school, and is a proven winner, but the Greenies got greedy when he was the HC and let him go. He was also a solid coordinator at SMU, for the record. Eh, maybe he's hoping to grab the Memphis job when Fuente is hired away.

Much the same as June at SMU, Dickey had a significant downturn at the end of his time at UNT

I get the argument. I just don't agree with it. I think it makes NTSU look unstable.

I don't think waiting for 2 more losses costs you anything. I don't really think firing the guy 5 weeks in gets you anything.

Chip Kelly is making jokes about going to the UNT State armadillos because it's a great opportunity at his weekly presser here in Philly.

Anything he can do to make local media ignore fact that both UT and USC jobs would double his salary would be loved here. [deleted] eagles...crap organization for a crap town.

It really has been a steady decline since the Scott Bakula/Kathy Ireland days for NTSU.

In all seriousness that should be a great job for a young coordinator. They were paying McCarney 750K. They have the best stadium in C-USA. Virtually zero academic standards. Fertile ground for recruiting.

Honestly it is a better job than half of the G5 if they could get their act together.
Back off Warchild seriously.
