Any coach that we are considering, would have done his homework about the atmosphere here of the strong 15k fans. They know that it never really got big (outside of SWC foes) under June Jones. It certainly never got big under HCCM (rain ruined the TCU game). We had slightly better fan attendance at homecoming that normally turns barren into the 2nd half but they stayed to watch. These coaches really shouldn't be surprise when they takeover. Most of them, if any, who takes this job knows: it's a limited budget, limited fan attednance, comfortable living, no hot seat and a great audition for the next gig. Until we have like 3-4 consecutively successful coaches come through in a 3-4 year span, those factors won't change.
I know it won't be popular and even less likely that it actually happens but I would like to see Mack Brown be the hire. He's a legend among high school coaches in Texas, won a national championship, would be a cash cow for the program with donors, etc. The word is he has the itch to coach again. Maybe he's the Larry Brown hire in that you make him the HC who is truly acting as a CEO with the caveat that he hires a young hot shot OC/DC that will be the HC In Waiting like Jank. Mack is here for 3-4 years and keeps the momentum headed in the right direction while we are securing our future success with a young OC/DC.
Yes the final years at Texas were a mess but a big part of it was missing on QB's. We have Hicks for two more years and a veteran offense to support him. Go get a killer staff of young recruiters and bring in Mack to close the in-home visits/NSD stuff. I think he'd do fantastic at SMU.
It looks like an hour ago that the deal is being finalized with Chad Morris to Arkansas. I wish they hurry up and get it done already. I'm guessing during the quiet period that Chad is going to his select recruits and say "want to go to a P5 school with actual fans". Anyways, just can't wait till they rip off the band-aid and find us a new one to put on. I really hope we make the right hire.

This next hire might be the most important one we make. If our a.d. makes a poor hire who is unsuccessful it will set this program back many years. The difference between this hire and c.m. was that c.m. was being recruited for over a year plus he wanted to get back to Texas.
Clemson fan joking on Twitter remarked-after hearing that Morris was trying to steal Venables-"Watch SMU now go hire Jeff Scott"
I laughed then realized that's not such a bad idea. Ace recruiter, Clemson Offensive Coordinator running our Offense, knows several of the younger SMU Coaches who might not be picked up for Arkansas, was tentative pick as SMU Offensive Coordinator until Clemson promoted him. Who cares if Patterson isn't helping us any more as long as the premier program in America is. Put him on the list-negative-no Texas ties. Still laughin a bit about that Clemson fan
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

So this makes me wonder, what all is the gentleman's agreement with nabbing coaches from programs you were at? When I hear of CM grabbing Venables, part of me thinks "Yeesh should you be pulling from the program that brought you up?" - I don't know that answer. It is a dog eat dog world, sure, but the complicated reality is that relationships in this industry are paramount, and I would have to imagine you'd be staining some of them by poaching a school that treated you well.

I wonder if SMU gets compensated for the coach leaving them mid-season. Really leaves us in the lurch for the bowl game, and should be discontinued. I really really dislike coaches leaving and not seeing out the bowl game.
My thoughts on Chad Morris can't be expressed on this board right now. I can say that I'm not at all surprised though, I'm not sure he ever put both feet into this program in the first place.
