far and away the best part of Dallas is that all of that stuff is usually only one flight away, no connections

I can see that now, lol. Was a lot tougher in my early 20s with limited money. Was all about where I could drive. I love my visits now, but I live walking distance to the beach, so everyone wins.

I can't believe we have 6 pages on this thread for a recruiting coordinator that never assisted in reaching a winning record.

just another fine example of the rabid SMU fan base. I think it depends on who Doh hires as a replacement and what he does with the position whether or not Lutz is a big loss or not. At a minimum, its a disruption that i doubt was planned for.

Agreed. All his great recuits have led us to 28 games under .500 over the past 4 years. Lutz is a great guy and hard worker but the main thing this reveals to me is that Doh's right hand man, longest tenured assistant, and only original assistant still remaining now decided to abandon the sinking ship. Can't blame him, the writing is on the wall with this sorry program.

Did you even read any of this thread? Seriously, the agenda is crazy w/you. Lutz didn't bail to avoid getting fired at SMU. We're 28 games under .500, and he's been getting offers for quite some time. If he had stayed, and the entire staff was canned, he'd still get better offers then SMU. It just makes no sense to say he bailed, when he was offered a better job, for more money, at a hoops school, top 15 in attendence etc.

No agenda my man, just the facts. Isn't it sad that Creighton is a "hoops school" in Omaha and SMU can't become one in Dallas?? Isn't it sad that Lutz would rather be the #3 assistant at Creighton then the #1 assistant and recruiting coordinator at SMU? And quite pimping their attendance numbers...geez what the heck else are you going to do in Omaha on a Tuesday night during the winter?? Yet again I appreciate your spin DOHctoring...Creighton has better attendance!, his wife wanted to move!, etc etc...its never SMU or Doherty's fault in your world. After legendary stops at Incarnate Word, Garden City, SFA, and 28 games under .500 at SMU don't try to oversell him. He is a good man and hard worker and he left for a better opportunity, we all get that. Its just sad that the #3 assistant position at Creighton is more desirable then the #1 position at SMU...and its sad that Creighton is what we are not: a winning program. Of course if the ship is taking on water and the captain keeps hitting icebergs you are going to abandon ship...I'm sure Brown, Geary, and Raven all see the same thing. It wouldn't surprise me if they are looking for an escape route as well...kudos to Lutz for finding one. Please don't act as if SMU/Doh's complete lack of success over the past 4 years had no bearing on his decision to leave whatsoever, you look foolish.

You don't have any facts in that diatribe, moody, just blustery prose dripping w/agenda. First, Lutz isn't the 3rd assistant. He's their head recruiter, and will have more say there w/regards to Xs & Os, then he did at SMU. Even if he were 3rd assistant, he got a sizable pay raise, at a better hoops school then SMU has been, since roughly the time Lutz was in grade school. No, SMU can't become a hoops school, b/c you don't just become one. It has to be part of the culture. There isn't one hoops first school in Texas, and there never will be. It's a football state. No, we won't average 15k in Dallas, even if we won CUSA every year and had the facilities. It's not that type of fanbase. Again, Lutz was going to get a better position then SMU, had he left last year, this year, or next year. His reputation is strong in the industry, and pretty much no one blames the state of SMU on him.

We get it, you hate Doh. I'm not a huge fan of the state of this program either. You always act like I'm defending the guy, when the reality is that I could care less about the man. What I care about is repairing this positions reputation within industry circles. I've made that clear 1000 times. SMU can't fire another hoops coach early. They are better going long then short.

And it does no good to continue to bag on the program when it's only going to cause harm. Give Doh his year, then scream for blood if he doesn't deliver.

You continue to spin and attack without actually taking a second to listen. I've never said I hated Doh. NEVER. I've said I hate the results. You state to care about repairing SMUs rep within the industry circles, yet the 100% assistant turnover, horrible recruiting errors, and constant losing are FAR more damaging then whether or not we let go of our head coach after year 5 instead of year 4. At this point we would be best served cutting our losses...obviously that is not going to happen this summer but it doesn't mean I or anyone else should be content with this programs continued blunders and utter mismanagement under Doh's direction. The best way to repair our reputation is to WIN genius.

LOL, don't waste your breathe telling a basketball industry guy how to repair SMUs rep in the basketball community. That's pretty rich even for you, moody, seeing as you actually have no idea how the SMU job is perceived in coaching circles, or the industry in general. What you just did was make stuff up on a message board, based on nothing first hand, or any actual expertise. I applaud you.

Staff turnover, recruiting errors , and losing have nothing to do w/this programs rep in the industry. That's all stuff fans point to, and get frustrated by, but they are irrelevant to the schools ceiling in industry terms. Take a macro perspective, micro man. What is relevant is that administration, boosters and alum, show support and patience. Did you guys forget that we self-reported, to can a minority coach, at a rich, white, private school? On top of that, it looks like he was thrown under the bus, so we could bring in a primadonna, wealthy, Park Cities hire, that looks a little more like the student body. That's cowardly in ways that can't be expressed, smacks of race, and IS blackball worthy in almost every major hoops market in America.

You want real coaching talent, show patience w/this coach, and then show the next one real money. Pay 1 mill per, not a 450k-600k w/ no shoe, tv/radio or real camp money. You can't WIN w/o attracting the proper bench talent for the position & university. You can't attract proper bench talent w/o coin and some administrative assurances.

LOL! I almost forgot how much of a self-important basketball industry guy you are WannabeDoh. We have shown plenty of "patience." Kids have entered SMU and graduated without so much as having a single winning basketball team over these past 4 seasons. The freakin President of the United States is elected every 4 years, yet we should give Doh more time then the leader of the free world?? Please. Have you ever heard the saying "winning cures everything"?? I will say it again: the best way to cure our reputation is to WIN einstein. Because I'm feeling generous, I will give you another saying to chew on over the weekend WannabeDoh: "Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and its cowardice."

Not self important, it's a job that gives me unique perspective into this topic and many others like it. I'm stating the way it needs to be handled, from an industry & coaching circle perspective, but you choose to ignore the root issues that contribute to the toxic rep.

Either way, your hating is misplaced, when the reality is that it's just this year. I have no idea why you're still so hung up on this topic. I'm not an Orsini fan-boi, but he's asked around, and understands the situation. We're either pretty darn good, or we're running a coaching search less then a year from now. At that point we need to bring real commitment & real money to the table. Any new coach worth his price tag will need some admin assurances as well.
