I say it has no bearing. they will all compete, and the best player will play.
as JJ has said (or, should have said, or might have said) "the great ones will compete".

Prinz won't be here until the fall or maybe the spring of 2013 at SMU and would be a red shirt anyway I would expect and would play in 2014. This wouldn't hamper his college choice I shouldn't think....

If GG only has one year of eligibility (2013) he would only be here for Printz's freshman year, right?

whether Gilbert has 1 or 2 yrs of eligibility left is an issue I am sure the coaches and Gilbert are aware of. I cannot believe that the coaches would aggressively pursue him if they believe he only has 1 yr left.
however, if it is truly uncertain, it may be that Gilbert is pursuing SMU for the opportunity to be coached by JJ, and with the understanding that he is rolling the dice as to whether he might be able to gain an additional year of eligibility.

Nice family (never met them as I believe a good neighbor is one you have never met but everyone else likes them), live a couple streets over. One of the yards my dog has not pooped in

He will most likely still have more experience at QB then anyone else we could run out there.

I think the thinking goes like this, Gillber transfers and has to sit out 1 year after which he will have 1 or two years of eligability. Next year (gilberts sit out year) Kyle starts after winning the competition with Kiaser and Preston, Preston likely wins the back up role but maybe not. Next year Kyle leaves, gilbert is now eligible and Competes with Preston who now has 3 years of eligibility left winner starts loserbacks up Printz having arrived for spring ball is planned on red shirting. Lets assume Gilbert wins the comp. After 1 year lets assume he he returns for another, after the second year we Have Preston as a 5th year senior competing with Printz who has 3 years of eligibility left, if Preston wins Prinzt backs up and comes in with 2 more years of eligibility.

Sounds like a pretty nice situation from a QB perspective for the next 7 years

Gilbert, a junior from Lake Travis, will have two years of eligibility remaining because he suffered a shoulder injury during the second game of the season, against BYU. He can get this season back with a medical hardship because he played in less than 30 percent of the Longhorns’ games.

Hey Texas Tech has had great success starting Seniors waiting in line. We've had success this year starting a Senior who sat on the Bench. I have no problem with starting experienced Seniors/Upperclassmen. FINALLY. QBs should probably sit 1 preferrablty 2 years

How can you possibly know that in regards to the redshirt?? He will likely be the highest rated recruit to come to SMU in over 20 years and unless we have a stud QB in place, I'm guessing he will have a chance to win the starting job the day he steps foot on campus.

overall, it's nice having a stable of qbs to develop and compete.

Here is a more visualy simple representation

2012: Kyle Starts after beating Kiaser and Preston in spring ball and fall camp, gilbert sits out 1 year. Printz is in HS

2013: Gilbert and Preston compete for starting job loser is back up, Printz redshirts

2014: Gilbert is starter (assuming has 2nd year of eligibility, if not Preston starts after winning competition against Printz) printz is back up.

2015: Preston now a 5th year senior competes against RS Sohpmore Printz for the starting job,

2016: Printz starts

2017: after rediculous numbers printz comes back for his final season to take SMU back to a BCS bowl
