I'm glad somebody posted that because the words "out of the control" of the player are terms of art. There is an NCAA pamphlet out there that clearly says transferring and sitting out a year to become eligible is not "beyond the control of the player." So assuming even if his Doctor verified that he was not medically able to perform for the rest of 2011 and 2012 he still didn't lose 2 years for something out of his control-he lost the 2nd year because he transferred. It sucks for the kid because he admirably gave up his redshirt to come off the bench for his teammates when McCoy got hurt in the National Championship but I think he is screwed. I wish he met an exception-hopefully they find a loophole but I doubt it.

ignoring Gilbert's case, is there any movement to have this changed in the future?

Agree with everything 90%. He played in 9 games as a freshman so his redshirt was toast long before the championship game.

UT would be very happy if Gilbert at SMU took a nick out of TCU and Baylor.

Question: Is it possible for him to transfer to SMU mid semester - like right now and become a SMU student on Monday. If so, could he count get a medical redshirt for this year and also count it as his sit out year so he would still have two years and be eligible?

I would assume not since the medical deal is a conference decision and the transfer rule is an NCAA rule.
