There are 6 million people in DFW. Getting 30,000 to Ford to see a winning, and entertaining football team should be a piece of cake.
11,000 students including grads, 40,000 alums in DFW (60,000 in Texas) - not sure if those numbers are still accurate, but getting half of that number would be a huge stretch. We can count on about 20,000 for just about anybody. Better opponents can spike that up 3,000-5,000.
We need about 5,000+ from somewhere else - I don't expect to see our current conference rivals to bring much, with a few exceptions. We need to pursue: Methodist Churches (UMYF), DISD, Pee Wee Football, FCS, High School Bands, DFW sports fans, other school alumni groups (adopt a local team) - there are opportunities out there.
We certainly will not increase attendance without people seeing the product. Find a way to get folks to the stadium and when they have a good time, we may see them again.
I took a couple of UCF grads to the game that live here and they had a pretty good time - not counting the loss of course. I suspect they will be back in the future, schedule permitting.

Is it really that difficult to hop on Southwest Airlines like Mrydel and others do for almost every home game? Sorry your harsh/condescending tone about lack of fans in the stands while you sit on your [Gary Patterson] and watch games at home hits me as a bit ironic. Filling the stands is a complicated puzzle with wins being the most important, but we do need someone that is extremely passionate and creative 24/7 in charge of a marketing department outreach to Dallas with the goal of filling Ford Stadium every week.

Like many on this board I am also disappointed in the attendance. Living in Peru it is two long days of travel for me to just get to Dallas. I usually plan to attend two games a season if we have two consecutive home games. Hence I am not overly sympathetic with those that only have to travel 300-500 miles to get to a game. More of us need to pony up and support this team.
Yesterday my tickets were in sec 103. My row was half filled and myself and my guest moved to better seats on the same row because there were so few people there.
An idea that came to mind - have one good section with open seating. The season ticketholders would have their sections and one section could be open seating so that people could bring guests and they could be seated together. Price of the tickets would be the same as normal. It would just be a 'first come-first served' basis whereby the fans could choose the row and area they wanted to sit in.
Winning and better known teams will help the attendance but we still need to get the casual fan to become a Mustang advocate.
GO PONIES!!!

Nice thought but that is already in effect due to no security control. It irks me a little that I have to pay a large up front fee and season ticket fee to get my seats and then half of my section is filled with "move ins" including the free ticketed students. When they raised the up front money we were assured that the yellow coats would monitor the section to make sure this did not occur but we all knew that would not happen.
I am happy for any butts in the stands and I am not one to normally cry about something like this, but if you are going to promote a tiered pay in program, then it should be properly monitored.

Mrydel- totally empathize with your sentiments. One of the things that needs to be done as attendance grows is to police the seating. I suspect there are some that don't buy season tickets and pay the 'membership' fee just because they know they can move to better seats. Of course that diminishes the value of those who do contribute.
GO PONIES!!!

A BCS conference check would go a long way towards rebuilding some kind of marketing department, I would imagine.

For the peeps that want to drink at games (ahem, me), can we PLEASE have an easy in and out policy without being confronted by nazi smu security?
It is ridiculous that we complain about attendance and yet we won't let people back into the stadium once they leave. Check the [deleted] ticket stub, give me a wristband, whatever.
This policy must be changed now, and that should be priority number 1. And you will see more butts in the seats. Drunk butts, but butts nonetheless.

How does are gate policy compare to other schools? I have always thought it was odd and something that can be quickly changed if necessary. What are the admins seasonings or have simply not enough people voiced a formal complaint?

I live in NC/DC (work in DC, have a house in NC), and have hit up ECU, UNC, NC St, Maryland and Navy games. None of these schools sell beer or alcohol inside their stadium, which is expected. But I have never had a problem going in/out at these games. Nor have I ever had a problem bringing booze in.
At SMU games, I feel like I am going on an international flight to Israel. I had a SEALED water bottle that I was made to throw away before entering Ford. We came down last year for the UH homecoming game, horrible rain delay, and we were too afraid to leave during the delay fearing they wouldn't let us back in.
Those schools have NOTHING that compares to the Blvd. I assure you, it is just parking lot tailgating at those places, so there isn't areal reason to leave except to get some drinks from your cooler at halftime. But at SMU, the blvd is so cool that people want to experience that more than they do the game. So let em go for a while, let em come back in when they are done.
We are empty b/c we are not letting people come back in when they want to. So [deleted] stupid!

We should put ticket sales people at every exit at half time selling $10 seats.

I think we're on to something here NC. Attendance numbers will hold steady throughout the game and ticket sales will bring in an extra $20k.
