Georgia Tech to the Big 10

If this is all about the Big Ten network, then GT brings a lot more to the table than UVA/UNC. Atlanta is a much bigger TV market than Raleigh/Greensboro Charlotte or Richmond. GT and UVA are about the same size undergrad, UNC slightly larger. UVA probably has about 100,000 living alumni in Virginia and virtually no real following outside of that group.

Georgia Tech ought to worry about moving North outside its natural recruiting footprint. They'd be better off recruiting in a Southern Conference with Clemson, Florida St., Miami etc. Texans haven't exactly flocked to SMU moving into the Big East despite the fact that until recently it looked like a stronger conference,

That is absolutely correct. But the Big Ten network and the colleges look at $$$. The B1G wants access to the south to recruit since clearly it needs southern players instead of midwestern ones to compete with the SEC. Because Atlanta has a 2.4 Million media market. #9 that's where the $$$$ come in. If they add Atlanta to the Big Ten network that adds $1 per household which means about $2.4 Million additional revenue to the BTN. The question then becomes is $2.4 Million a year is this plus the additional revenue from CBS for network television rights and putting the screws to ABC/ESPN worth adding another mouth to feed in the B1G? And does GT want to be the school that gives those yankees from B1G a foothold in the south

UVA President gave his unconditional support to stay in the ACC today. Guess they didn't get a dance invite.

Does GT deliver the ATL market though? Maybe a stupid question, but is GT in the Big Ten going to get cable providers in GA to suddenly drop everything and charge their subscribers extra to carry the BTN?

UVa would pull in Richmond, Norfolk/Hampton Roads/Va Beach, and shore up the DC market for the B10. I think UNC would be the #1 choice of the B10 from the remaining ACC schools, though.

But Georgia Tech was a founding member of the SEC and, after 69 years, decided that the SEC did not work for them. Georgia Tech wants/needs a more academic conference. People in Atlanta have certainly watched Georgia Tech play ACC teams such as Virginia Tech, Clemson and Miami. I'm sure they can get used to Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, etc.

Lots of UVa grads in NYC, and other major cites through out the country. Approximately, one third of UVa undergrads are from out-of-state and another third comes from the very transient Northern Virgina area. The professional schools have a majority of out-of-state students.

It's interesting how the B1G went after AAU schools in large media markets with marginal sports programs, while the ACC went for a weak academic school in a smallish market with better sports programs. Apparently, UVA, UNC, Duke and Wake Forest initially wanted to add UConn while the rest of the conference wanted Louisville. There was even some comment made at the press conference announcing Louisville as a new member to the effect that one school will not bring down the academic reputation of the whole conference. The academic issue appears to be a touchy suject within the ACC.

University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan is warning students and faculty of the potential cuts that could come from the looming fiscal cliff.

UVA faces millions of dollars in possible cuts to federal financial aid and research if lawmakers on Capitol Hill fail to reach a deal by the end of the year.

Perhaps UVa will be knocking on the B1G's door for those extra millions if the politcs don't work out.

That's part of UVa's annual pre-general assembly dance. UVA has for years talked about becoming a private school due to its wealthy alumni base and large endowment and always cries poor about this time of year. The fiscal cliff will hit them no doubt, but for some reason I think Mr. Jefferson's University will come out okay. Of course I went to law school at the other state ivy in Virginia, William and Mary, which has always gotten the crumbs that the larger schools left on the table, yet has managed to keep its small size and academic bona fides.

Ga Tech is prob the fourth biggest team in ATL behind UGA, UF and Clemson...they are essentially what TCU is to Dallas. No one, and I mean no one, in Atlanta is going to give a damn about a Ga Tech v Northwestern football game. The move looks good on paper, but idiotic in reality.

Good for the Jackets, I guess.
