New Idea To Increase Ford Attendance

We will probably never get the fans that Green and Coug can get. For grins let’s discover why. Size: SMU is not even a third the size. Local Factor: 90% of students from UNT/UH reside in TX, whereas SMU is 50%. For grins, say every Texan showed up for a game. UNT/UH would get approx. 32-35,000 fans whereas SMU would pull a stellar 4,800. I doubt every Texan would show so let’s look at "locals" and you would have approx. 17-22,000 fans where SMU would bring in closer to 2,500. Huh.

UNT UH SMU
Undergrad uate 28,911 30,452 6,249
All 35,778 39,820 10,893
Immediate TX County 17,048 22,440 4,806
Other TX Counties 15,116 13,031
Out-of-State 1,739 984 4,805
International 1,875 3,365 1,282

I pulled together some quick and dirty statistics from college stats dot com so we can compare universities on an academic level. I will not even get into the debate on that end.

I know the thread started off tongue-in-cheek and then got even further off-base with our houston high troll, but a serious idea that I have had would be for the athletics dept./school to bring in students (like the band idea) from not only the Metroplex, but other parts of the state or big cities close to Dallas, e.g. Houston, Austin, San Ant., OK City, Shreveport. You bus the kids in for a day game and give them a food pass or something for 1 meal at the game and then bus them home afterwards. You also give them SMU shirts to wear. This not only helps fill the stadium, but helps SMU awareness with both student-athletes and just students that are localized to our area. I believe we need more in-state and near-state students to have a stronger more supportive alum base in the future.

We know the tickets don't all sell so those are essentially free and so the cost really is the bus trip, meal and t-shirt, maybe $25 per student? This is pretty pricey if you were committed to doing it for every home game and on a scale that makes an impact, say 2,500 per game, but this could be a new program that alums/boosters could participate in sponsoring. I believe the long-term dividends would pay off.

Yeah! Maybe we could call it like the "Bus Brigade" or something!

Yeah. Get someone else to pay for the buses. I am never doing it again.

It would be unique to see the stadium starting to fill up in the middle of the fourth quarter.
