That game should have been close to a sell out and would have sold 30,000 tickets at any former SWC school with the exception of Rice. If we can't show the world that we have a modicum of fan support we are not moving to a better position in the world of college football.

Agreed, that was the "fairest weather" a fair weather fan could have asked for in years, but apparently we need a number of years of "fair weather" and also we have to be playing just the right opponent. I understand all those things are necessary to get unaffiliated folks interested, but more SMU alumni who live in the region (which does not include redpony who lives out of the country I thought) need to be a little less fair weather.

Again the evidence is the kid that had narrowed his choices to SMU and Nebraska. And then out of the blue committed to ASU when they did not even have a coach. The shows full intent to recruit the kid to another school while still on SMU's payroll. That is not a kid asking what would happen. That is a kid actually committing to a school without a coach. Wonder how that happened?

I think the only thing you could convict him of is recruiting for the U of JJ.

I guess that depends whether someone is a coach, Sherwood Blount, or a SMU marketing guy.

All coaching staffs use every recruiting service they can find. We used to argue on ponyfans a decade ago whether Coach A gave a [deleted] about how recruiting services rated a player. They used to deny they ever looked at them but the budgets of state universities that have been revealed to the publc show they have substantial line items in their budgets for recruiting services. One reason its essential is because the recruit interviews show what the recruits are thinking. If you were a salesman wouldn't you want an interview about what your prospective buyer wanted to purchase. This has also been confirmed by Rivals/Scout on numerous ocassions-they all subscribe to these services

I don't know as much about recruiting services as most of you but I have always wondered if the fact that UT, Nebraska, Alabama, etc are looking at a kid automatically makes the kid a hot prospect. In other words, isn't it possible that UT's talent is so highly rated because their interest in a kid ignites interest by OU and A&M etc thus causing the kid's stock to rise? Isn't it partly a self fulfilling prophecy?

not really valid because most kids on say a Top 10 recruiting class have 10, 20, 30 hell 50 offers including all the top programs. Right now there is a lot criticism of Texas recruiting but if you go back and check a whole bunch of other schools missed too on the same kids. There may be something though to the argument that early recruiting may make recruiting more difficult because some of these recruits are being offered based on their performance in their sophomore year or early Junior year.

One might argue that we have fairly consistent attendance regardless of record with the exception of a brilliant marketing campaign for 1978-1979 and the Pony Express era.

I agree and know where you are going with this but I think their is an opportunity to connect to Dallas fans that didn't exist in the past. Reason - average cost for family of 4 to attend a Dallas Cowboys game in Arlington is over $600. You can almost buy a season ticket to SMU FB for the cost of parking your car to 1 Cowboy game.

That and enough people to fill Ford move to Dallas & Collin county every how often ?

If Stallion agrees with me I must be right. I would add one thought to the issue of butts in the seats: The broadcasters (particularly ESPN) have had, and will continue to have, a great deal to do with future re-alignment. The Big 12 was a product of a potential TV contract. Notice we were not asked to play. The networks HATE to broadcast pictures of empty seats for obvious reasons and that is mostly what we give them. Section upon section of dust gathering benches. We also complain that the media ignores us. Of course they do. So do our own fans.
