Preferring chocolate over vanilla is not the same as choosing whether or not to eat ice cream.

Opportunity cost must be weighed one way or another

No, but you choose whether you act on it or not, by calling someone and asking them on a date, approaching them at a party, whatever. This argument that sexuality isn't a "choice" is myopic; everything we do is a choice.

Ok. I can agree it's a person's choice to act on it or not.

And I guess whether everyone should be free to act is a topic we've all already over-expressed our feelings on, especially given that this is just a football fan board.

I'd honestly like to understand why you think it's myopic? It has mattered a great deal in the huge shift of public attitudes over the last 20 years that a growing majority of Americans do not think sexual orientation is a choice, and therefore have moved toward encouraging stable relationships among gay Americans.

My point is that your sexuality is a choice- gay, straight, bi, whatever. I choose to date women, some men choose to date other men. Yeah, you have preconceived tendencies about what you're attracted to, but it's ultimately a choice of who you decide to have relations with. There are celibate people in the world today who are attracted to others but have decided to abstain from sex- that is their choice.

Research has been done to show that some people are predisposed to pedophilia- I certainly hope they make the CHOICE to not act on their predispositions. And no I am not equating homosexuality to pedophilia in any way- having sex with another consenting adult and having sex with a child are two completely different things. My point is that people are born with tendencies of what they're attracted to, but their sexuality is determined by their choice of whether to act on them or not.

I've always been of the opinion that whether or not it is a choice is irrelevant. I know many disagree, but I just don't really care what people do unless they're victimizing or restricting the rights of others.

Yeah, I don't disagree. I have my own religious reservations about homosexuality, but if two men or two women want to have sex with each other it doesn't affect me at the end of the day. The Republican Party today should be able to know a losing battle when they see one and move on to more important issues to fight for

Frankly, I think all this will become a non story very soon except to the fringe elements (tea party, Limbaugh folk etc..). No one seemed to mind in Dallas 20 years when we had a gay quarterbacking our professional team. Granted he tried to be private about it but everyone knew. No locker room problems then.

I'm pretty sure people on the other side of the political spectrum will prevent it from becoming a non-story just as much as the Limbaugh folk you cite.

Also, doesn't do anyone any favors to insinuate things about Troy's sexuality. He has two kids and I know for a fact he dates some pretty hot women in Dallas so I don't know why people are fixated on him possibly being gay when there's direct evidence indicating otherwise. It's his private life- why should we care?

Because someone has children means they are not Gay? could never be Gay? Rubbish. Just ask some female friends of mine whose husbands married and had kids for protection because the Dallas business climate was so oppressive they had to have a traditional family to cover up the truth. Given the overly conservative social mores of this city the aforementioned scenario is not uncommon. Less so now that in the past but it still happens.

Republicans (well, religious right republicans) need to get out in front, recognize gay marriage as a lot battle, and switch to endorsing it on the grounds that a stable married household is a positive in the family values category.

I think I've been pretty consistent on here that I don't think it's a big deal and shouldn't be a huge story in 2014. But by all means keep throwing around attacks

I don't know if Troy is gay or straight or bi. I know he's had sex with a woman at least twice seeing as how he has two kids. If he is gay and wants to share that with the world than that it his prerogative, but I don't think it does him or anyone else any favors to speculate about his sexuality. I certainly wouldn't want my sex life to be questioned by people who don't know me personally

I agree and disagree.

On one hand, yes, anyone that thinks politicizing this will help them "win" will politicize it. I'm not a fan of this from either side.

On the other hand, when was the last time someone argued to re-segregate the schools? I think to a certain extent once the "flashpoint" of this debate is resolved and any marriage is equally valid (in the eyes of the government) the issue will begin to fade. And I cannot wait; it's such a stupid issue to waste time on.
