Kind of a Wildcard name to throw out-but I wonder if Hart has a relationship at OU with Brent Venables -presently DC at Clemson. He has all the recruiting contacts and could probably put a strong coaching staff with Texas ties. He knows the importance of recruiting, how to put a recruiting staff together and place strong emphasis on recruiting. First name basis with most every high school in Texas. I kind of wonder why he has never gotten his shot though when everyone else on those OU staffs did. Basically throw his name out because of Hart/Venables OU connections. Wow he is only 44 years old but seems like he's been around for 3 decades. Been a Coordinator at BCS programs for 18 years. He's from that deep K-State connection that has produced so many great coaches. Plus he's a face-jock-so he's got that going for him
I'm assuming SMU doesn't hire a coach for some time. So does anyone know how recruiting works during this dead period? How can the current staff recruit (not that we want them to)? I mean, can Hart recruit?
you can't do much to save our class except stay in constant contact. I'm sure we will lose several kids that have decent offers. It wouldn't surprise me if we lost 7-8 kids and I'm sure many will be looking around. I don't blame them. They don't know how they will fit with new regime. The key is to hit the road strong by early December. Otherwise you are left with about 2 real weeks of recruiting after Dead Period ends after National Championship.

Next question, does it violate NCAA Rules to have a contract that is incentive based? Some told me there is a prohibition in collegiate athletics for such a provision as it is in conflict with student-athlete interest b.s. etc.....

Stop this Chizik talk. Auburn has ALWAYS had great talent. Not necessary to give Chizik credit where credit is not due. As a HC Chizik has not been consistent. Not taking away anything from the guy regarding his NC win. He got it done. No one can ever call the guy a "loser". However, he is not the right guy to build a program or take it to the next level. He had great talent at Auburn and his background as a coordinator has always been working with elite level athletes (Texas, Florida etc) All one needs to do is look at his experience in Ames to see he would not be a fit here.

No its a common practice-most every coach has incentives in his contract including academic/graduation incentives

It's OK to be biased Tide Pony, all good SEC rivals.
But really Auburn does get good talent, maybe a notch below the Tide some years but still top 10 year in year out.
Chiz was just such a poor motivator that he struggled even with great talent.
Like one of the other posters noted, look at his time at Iowa State, that shows how he can produce with the talent level you would find at SMU.
As for some of these other rejects and has beens being floated about, the last thing we need is another JJ.
Jones got the program to where it was not a laughing stock, let's take that capital and leverage it into a good hire that can take us to the next level.
Am I wrong that the "Larry Brown Formula" is the only proven way to go? I'm stunned how anyone wants to take a gamble on an unproven coordinator on the rise. Big schools can gamble on coordinators. Not SMU. Come on everyone, do you all really want to waste 5 years? I mean, wasn't that what Phil Bennett was? Bennett was a great D-Coordinator at K-State, had Texas roots, had energy, focused on the metroplex etc...
