If what he told Bud Elliot is true, I would call the kid back and say again that we need a 100% commit or we're going to keep looking too. I view this as a soft commit and not in line with the spirit of the offer.

What do you mean spirit of the offer? You do know there is such a thing as a soft commit? I know maybe we should make you the recruiting coordinator. You would definitely tell those 3 star players with double digit offers where to go since at 1-11 we have plenty of them lined up at the door.

I understand soft commits. I'm just telling you that the SMU staff said you've got to be 100% solid before committing. And when you do commit, we're not going to recruit any other quarterbacks. We are done.

That was the deal.

Given the current circumstances, as a coach do I take a soft commit from Moore? Yes. And then I keep looking for guys better than him. He's not all in, I'm not all in.

The number of SMU fans who remember the Chalmer Woodward years (1953 - 1956) can't be large. He was perhaps the worst case ever on the Hilltop of trying to find lightning in a bottle and on the cheap. IMO there could be a real debate as to who was worse for SMU football - Woodward or Jones - especially since so much money was thrown at the latter, and for a longer time.

Those remember the SWC in those days might agree there was at least one worse coach in Texas - the BB coach at Rice. Maybe that's a consolation to the shades of those persons who decided on Woodward.

A funny thing is, Woody Woodward had another coaching gig after SMU. It will absolutely be hilarious if JJ is employed again.

If there is an amateur astronomer on this message board, please tell us what (lucky) star shines over Tempe but not University Park.

And I can only repeat that I do hope David Moore will sign with SMU.

Terrific Post, NQ

Love the Woody Woodward reference, which proves there is no time limit when discussing incompetency.

Had to look him up, but funny thing is, as bad as you make him out to be, he would have qualified for 2 bowls during his 4-year stay at SMU (using tiki math of course).

Hmmm, 2 bowls in 4 years. Rather than criticize him, ever thought of raising $ for a statue of Woody.
I think the Campus is still in existence but have no idea if there is a "Letters from Readers" section or if and waht anyone wrote about JJ. Back in the day I'm recalling there was at least one letter from a sorority girl (well should say woman) panning HC Woodward. For a picture of the "might have been" use the search feature and find posts by Rayburn about the calamity when Broyles was not hired.

I think he is solid. Sells had his chance and seems to want to go to a bigger school which is fine. Craddock told him not to take anymore visits and he said he would not. No, need to start recruiting another QB and make the situation shaky.

The solid comment is about Moore, not Sells. Not sure why Mr. Green was necessary but oh well. Before I go I'll take a cherry Slurpee.
