the ACC is doing nothing. Our best chances are a re-built PAC. The issue there is a new media rights deal and it could possibly result in less than we are currently getting in the AAC. sort or leaves us between qr rock and a hard spot.

Clearly Stanford is pushing hard to be coupled with Cal. And that makes sense. They have a very close association that goes back for more than a century.
It looks like we will be left out again. I have had a feeling that this is how it ends up happening. After it’s all said and done, equal footing with UNT.

Hoping now they can’t flip the vote and we can join a PAC 2.0.

and so they invite only Stanford and cal. and we are left out. that destroys the PAC and we are left playing in a third level cesspool of a conference. guess we owe a great deal of gratitude to RGT for all he has done the last 25 yrs. for our athletic programs.

RedPony, the sad reality, for the SMU faithful, of which I’m one, we don’t bring anything, we don’t move the needle. All this talk about not taking any $$$$ for decades is silly..great, but what $$$$ do we bring? None. Schools like FSU, Clemson, etc are looking for BIG money movesΓǪthat ain’t us. How about we win a bunch of games, let’s try that, versus raiding our endowment and settling for ΓÇ£Monty’s TableΓÇ¥ΓǪPonyUP - Best LaTech, BEAT OU! Beat the frogs, damn it. #DoSomething

Winning in the AAC is like being the skinniest kid at fat camp.

I did not read this as SMU being left out. Just that it was separate, which is true. There is less travel, an exit fee from the AAC, and other differences from Calford. Not necessarily a no.

Don't disagree. Just pointing out the fact this admin did almost nothing for about 25 years. And us old timers see the result. We are now compared to that denton school and others of much less quality thanks to RGT, little Rickey, and aresco. I think the ship has sailed for us to become a first tier program. And of course our educational ranking is taking a hit as well.

All I can say, is if we dominate the AAC enough and if we get to the College playoff enough (assuming big programs will even play uf) as the skinniest girl at Fat Girl Camp, then the powers that be in the Playoff system will say, "hey, if SMU is in a P5 conference, that opens up a space for one of us".
So, just win and kick the door in. That starts with La. Tech, then OU and then TCU and then the AAC.

Winning doesn’t help, when they’ll just change the rules.

Why join the ACC giving up any revenue from them for years when it’s going to fall apart in a a year or two. That would be just like the 16 team WAC, Big East, and PAC whatever. I don’t think 3 20+ mega conferences are going to last any longer than the WAC. College football at the Division 1A level is history. It’s just minor league pro football sponsored by the schools.

"It does appear that even if the ACC does eventually vote to accept Cal and Stanford,
SMU would be a separate matter altogether. SMU’s once inclusion with the Pac-12 schools has fallen to the wayside."

"AP’s Ralph Russo reported last week that Stanford would be willing to join the ACC even if it meant greatly reduced or no media rights payouts for several years."
Apparently, Stanford sees enough value in joining the ACC that they're also willing to give up years of TV revenue. As some others have alluded to, I guess the strategy is to first get a seat at the table, so that the next time musical chairs are played, as least you still have a chance to stay at the table as opposed to not even being considered.
Regardless, it doesn't change the Ponies' strategy. Win now. Move up if we can. Keep winning to fill Ford and attract more DFW eyeballs.
