I have never really understood why any coach would ever call a behind the line of scrimmage pass on a 3d down. It seems to me you should always have the pattern beyond the 1d down marker.

Same reason they calls low percentage deep throws on 3rd down, because the defense doesn't expect it.

My experience is that the D will expect short quick passes and passes behind the line; however, they seldom expect deep passes.
