look if SMU can get Doh...you should do it...he will bring instant credibility to SMU hoops...but i will also say if you want it to work SMU has to make a commitment to the basketball program...thats means facility upgrades, pay your assistant coaches well, and give Doh money to recruit with...if SMU does that they will become a challenger in the conference.

Hadn't thought to look it up before, but I did look at Doherty's assistants. They are (i) a former player of his at Kansas; (ii) an assistant from Toledo, who before that had been an AAU coach and HS coach, apparently was Mike Dunleavy and Michale Finley's AAU coach; and (iii) an assistant coach from another small college in Florida. None of Doherty's three assistants at FAU had worked with him before.
SMU would probably pay assistants more than FAU, so the staff would probably be different somewhat. I would guess the former Kansas player would almost certainly come. I would bet the third assistant I mentioned would not follow Doherty to SMU. This is all hypothetical, of course.

I did a similar search. Rex Walters his main assistant was a very good player at KU and I believe he played for Doherty while Doherty was an assistant there. My guess is he would come here with Doherty. As for others, I agree with Hoop Fan that an effort should be made to get a local guy (ie, Tubbs 10 years ago when Dement hired him to mine Dallas which he did very well for us and OU) and/or a guy that played locally and has connections - what are Willie Davis, Damon Hancock, and Sasser up to these days?

Just a hunch, but if any coach with any name value at all shows interest, I expect such stipulations would be written into any contract.gomemphistigers1 wrote: ...but i will also say if you want it to work SMU has to make a commitment to the basketball program...thats means facility upgrades, pay your assistant coaches well, and give Doh money to recruit with...if SMU does that they will become a challenger in the conference...
And I think Blog's idea is a good one, too. If you're going to have three assistants, one should be hired solely as an ace recruiter.
