ya know, its gonna take an ego to come here. Who has a bigger ego than Spurrier as crazy as it sounds? He did coach at Duke early in his career, so this environment wouldnt be foriegn to him. Ok, what am I smoking?
Seriously folks, haven't we been at the altar before? Does Lucy pull the ball away before Charlie Brown kicks it this time? Rumors like this just get our hopes up.

If this guy is right, and the announcement is supposed to come shortly after SMU's last game, wouldn't it more than likely have to be a BCS coach whose team does not go to a bowl game?
That narrows the list a bit, right?

You want to test the waters on a "Big Slash" hire? Walk up to 10 people and say SMU just hired (add your favorite coach here). If you get a reaction of shock, then you have a big hire. Pick your top three and try it out. The man with the most people who recognize their name out of 10 wins.
Can't think of a better solution to this stupid thread based on "Inside Info" from a blog...Sorry Blog...

I've been saying that over and over SMUPONY. It's all about the shock value. If your friends aren't schocked, neither will the recruits be. Bowden is a shocker.

Ok, I just performed your test.
It appears that the Mustangs next football coach will be:
Vince Lombardi.
The Sample group was very shocked indeed.

Weiss or Tommy Bowden would be my guess based on the way that "rumor" is worded. I would think Franchione or Nutt would be much more expected around the Dallas/SMU community. Weiss or Tommy Bowden would truly be shockers.
Weiss may want to prove he can be a successful head coach but may be willing to take a pay cut to get out of the fishbowl. Tommy Bowden has been under appreciated since the day he arrived at Clemson and now has to watch the coach at his rival school (Spurrier) riding a wave of popularity at 6-5 with 5 straight losses while Bowden is still under pressure to win the ACC or else. He may be looking back fondly at his days at Tulane?

TheRealTruth wrote:Can't be a big splash unless it's Bowden and he's not at a BCS School. If Arkansas's Coach comes to SMU, that won't even be a ripple. I'm pretty sure I came up with the term "big splash". That rumor site has just been monitoring ponyfans.com. I'm going to sue for trademark infringment.
There are times to speak and times not to speak. Anytime you wish to say something is a time not to speak.

Yeah, except when I tried it the guy I was talking to said, "How're you guys gonna get Bobby Bowden?"

Ty Willingham would not surprise me. The alumni base is clamoring for him to be replaced by UW golden child and Seahawks assistant Jim Mora, Jr.

Weiss would be a disaster. He can't even win at Notre Dame against Navy. Lost to NAVY at home.

We lost to Rice at home as well as a lot of other low-level teams. Weiss would be great at SMU as well as many of the other canidates mentioned on this board. The real question is will SMU make the changes to the model to allow these coaches to recruit, take transfers, Juco's, etc. like our competition.

I'd say that most of the names you guys are throwing out would be "WOW" hires. Willingham, Fran, Bowden(s), Weis, Leach, etc. I guess you guys are dreaming big here but I would have to say that your expectations are quite high.

Fran would not be a "wow" hire. Fran would be a "why on Earth would SMU hire someone who can't win at a$m?" hire.

There's no way Wies is leaving ND so we don't have to worry about that.
