I don't know if he can recruit or not. My initial thought was that Martz is kind of a schmuck and wouldn't have the personality to recruit... but he's also an f'ing offensive genius who would surely get interest from guys on that side of the ball. Spend some cash on assistants who can recruit.

Hi, my name is Mike Martz. I know what it takes to succeed in the NFL. I have multiple contacts with multiple professional organizations. I was the architect of one of the NFL's most prolific offenses in the history of the game. Here, look at my Super Bowl ring.

Maybe so, but it wasn't necessarily our offense that was an unmitigated disaster at times last year.

Hey, if he can teach our offense to tackle, then maybe they can play both ways next season?

Our football players don't go both ways.

KnuckleStang wrote:Martz doesn't excite me at all, let me make that clear. But I think USC is not so great an example to use in this case. When they hired him, Pete Carroll had absolutely zero experience recruiting. At least not in the previous 20 years or so.
It may not be a great example, but not bad either. Keep in mind that throughout its down years USC was still bringing in great recruiting classes with the likes of Carson Palmer, Jason Thomas (transferred to UNLV), Troy Polamalu, Williams, etc. That is why Pete Carroll was able to win his first season and go to the orange bowl the next year. Thanks to his winning and thanks to his great charisma he was able to attract Bush, White, Booty, etc. At USC, USC does most of the recruiting for the coach, at SMU we need a coach to instill confidence in the recruits in order to sign on the dotted line.

If you had told me in October that we had $10 mil. to make a reasonable run at Kragthorpe, Johnson, Calhoun, Neuheisel, Jones and Martz, or just settle for Franchione in December, I would have preferred the run.
What reasonable run did we make at any of those guys starting back in October??? We made a reasonable run at Johnson, and everybody else is an unknown. As recently as late November Neuheisal called SMU a diamond in the rough and as best I can tell, nobody from SMU called Neuheisal. Or the rest of those guys for that matter, except for Jones, who we could not talk to until now. Give me Franchione on the phone with recruits the first week in November if we have to settle for him.

No, in his first one, he hired Doherty in 18 days.

The wait will have been worth it to land Jones IMO. Obviously we'd like to have made a hire a while ago, but I'd rather get a guy like Jones than someone that we could have hired weeks ago a la Franchione.
I love the fact that Franchione has been reduced to waiting around to hear if SMU might want him if no other options are available. He's getting what he deserves.
