Stallion has documented many instances of very successful programs that have hired cheap coordinators without head coaching experience. Football is more about the staff and recruiting than basketball. There is more than one right answer to this thing. Patterson was unproven before TCU gave him his opportunity.
It is all about doing more with less. You simply want to do more with more.
Do you really trust SMU to identify that up and comer? We havent in 30 years.
I suppose with the excitement surrounding Larry Brown at 73 years old and the recruits he is landing.....should we not dismiss the thought of older coaching candidates?

Basketball is a lot different from football. No, I don't think we need to bring in Don Shula

There's a name you're missing big time. Ken Niumatalolo, Navy head coach. Young, energetic. Runs Paul Johnson's offense to distraction. Knows how to recruit with handcuffs on. He'd be an A list hire.

Would he want to come here? How successful is an option offense going to be against TCU, Baylor, etc.? Can he recruit TX?

I don't follow the Tennesse Titans but former Texas DB Jerry Gray (Defensive Coordinator) has often been mentioned in coaching searches. Son is on SMU team. Isn't he tight with E.D. from their days with Rams. Ha-here's a picture of them together (almost). Anyway 8 years of experience as NFL Defensive Coordinator. About 11 years in NFL. UT actually hired him as Assistant head Coach in 2011 but he got the Titans job a couple of weeks later. He's 50-needs to make a jump pretty soon to head coach
He was a disaster as an NFL HC but if LSU does well this year - and they should - I've got to imagine his name becoming a bit of a commodity again.
Or is that too much in the vein of a June Jones?
Another former Chargers Offensive Coordinator... I like Cam, I really do, I just don't think he's head coaching material. Loved him when he had LT running circles around everyone, but I just don't see it.

So what is the success rate of NFL coaches turned college coaches without prior college coaching experience? Most of them that don't have college coaching experience don't know anything about recruiting.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
I think the main issue is whether they want to sit in their offices and draw Xs and Os all day like June Jones or whether they are willing to actually do the other half of their job. Plenty of NFL Coaches have done a fabulous job in College-and the ones that are successful have focused on recruiting. 3 names that jump off the page
Pete Carroll Nick saban Jim Mora
they came back to college prepared to do 100% of the job not 50% of the job like June Jones
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
