SMU had literally no basketball history (recent) or street cred in DFW or anywhere else for that matter. And yet, in 2 straight recruiting classes, we have landed a top ranked local kid - mcdonalds all american and possible one-and-done types of players!
I'd argue that football was actually perceived better than basketball at SMU up until last year - so June should be able to recruit and do what LB does. But for whatever reason (lazy, ego, coaching/recruiting style), he just doesn't do it or have a staff that can do it (outside of Mason and JP).
It makes no sense - the blueprint is right in front of him! Young, aggressive recruiters that get you top players and you can coach the heck out of them.
Have we not beaten this to death. LB could be here for just a year or two and turn the program around. That is not possible in football beyond the turnaround that JJ made in 2 years. Basketball is a totally different animal, 1 or 2 players can make all the difference. Not so in football. Basketball is the strength of the AAC. Crowds are easier to draw as far as filling Moody (you need far fewer for great atmosphere), the new Moody is far more top of the line than Ford (which is still a nice Stadium), and these kids only expect to be here (the really good ones) for a year or two, don't need to keep them in school while they develop.

Actually you do need to keep them in school if you plan to use them in games.

No that is what you believe and you have beaten it to death.
What we are arguing is that the model LB could and should be duplicated by our Fball. It may not turn around in a year for football but would make steady improvement. Plus he got guys with ties to particular areas. Name a FB recruiter that has the same cred with a certain area - any area.
The rest of your argument is excuse making. But be that as it may. Let's try the LB approach and see what happens.
You are a good mustang fan, but in this case I believe you are wrong, IMO.

LB put together a better staff in basketball than June did in football and that is what you fail to acknowledge. LB know he needs more than 1 or 2 players to turnaround this team in a strong AAC conference. That is why all of the recruits were good in this incoming class not just 1 or 2. As far as not being able to turn a football program around see Ball St or ASU. You make it sound like it is a cakewalk getting a 5 star kid. You come across as more of a June fan than an SMU fan but I hope that is not the case. The staff makes all the difference in the world.

I can't say it any better than 86 or Rebel10 or Treadway.
Abu, what you fail to realize is that, while BB and FB are different animals, recruiting is still the same. You have to be aggressive. You have to be a salesman. you have to develop relationships with HS staffs. You have to get out there and actually put in the WORK!
You cannot recruit from your office watching tapes that were submitted from who knows where. Yes, you may occasionally get a good tape. But you cannot build a team that way. LB sure as heck doesn't.
If I had to rebuild this staff from scratch (which I admit, no one has asked me to do!), the only coaches I would keep would be Jason Phillips and Tom Mason.

Agreed. Phillips seems to be the only one pulling his weight in recruiting with the Houston guys

I would not be upset at aiming high and missing out...but the serious lack of offers among what are considered the best players in the State is concerning...especially with QBs and WRs. Early on, June should have been able to easily sell that his offense was a proven way to become a NCAA stats leader and a good way to get you noticed and in the NFL. Zero top-level QBs besides Gilbert.
The QB might be a hard sell given that his two highest profile QB's he coached at Hawaii never even played a down of football during the regular season...............

That wouldn't have appeared to be the case in 2008.

I wonder how LB would do with 10 recruiters
I wonder how June would do with 3 recruiters
LB with 3 recruiters covers the Metroplex like a blanket
June Jones has no relationships with many of the Top Programs in DFW
More than 3 times the number of recruiters in Football

One wants to win and build a program and the other just wants to bank his check.

Completely disagree with this statement.
PB, without the benefit of 4 straight bowl appearances, without the benefit of the AAC, without the restrictions placed on him that even JJ admitted were unfair, without all that and more; PB recruited some pretty good players his first couple of years here. Players with multiple quality offers including above mentioned A&M, also Arkansas and Florida St among others. I suspect PB's 1st & 2nd full year recruiting classes were ranked higher than JJ's recruiting post ASU/Klemm.

FWIW - saw a couple of big givers to SMU (not to ad dept specifically) at church today. They say their understanding is that an amenable agreement for JJ to leave has occurred. (Yes this is pure gossip but it is a bye week and we need to discuss something.)
