Whose the backup?
We are not building a program we are pugging holes in the dike. (Add your own joke here)

Hold on... I like Burchum, but I am on record saying we are going to struggle next year. We have talented young receivers, talented young corners, and I think the OL as a whole gets better with age, but we certainly aren't at a point in the program where we can replace two starting receivers, a starting QB who was a stud, our best OL, two starting corners and two starting middle linebackers and be just fine.

And before anyone harps on it, I am not saying we should not be at that point in the program. Just pointing out the obvious that we aren't there.

I know I missed on our record last year because I thought the D was going to be really good, but I did get the offensive improvement right. The year before that I said we would be 5-7 or 6-6 when everyone else was saying we would win the division.

I won't make record projections until the schedule comes out, but we are going to struggle early. Still better than UNT, but we will struggle until the team starts growing up halfway through the conference schedule.

For most of the year, the offense carried the team. Once GG got hurt, we reverted back to the defense carrying things for the last three games, and our offense trying to run clock with Burcham going to the sidelines for play calls. I don't see that changing next year with the team being so young.

And yes, I get that a lot of teams around the country have a lot of young frosh that participate. But typically, those teams have experience or really good players around them that make up for the stupid mistakes that kids are bound to make. Young QBs can be studs... if they have a great o-line in front of them that gives them all day and fantastic receivers that make plays. We aren't there yet.

How do you think the OL will get better? Lost Gottschalk, Hughes, and Rice...

How did we lose Hughes? He was only a junior last season.

Hughes is back....but losing him would have been a good thing

I don't know if Hughes will start, but is losing Rice confirmed?

That will hurt, but he wasn't a starter for the last half of last year, Gottshaulk and him played the same position.

Hughes is graduating and will not play next year. Rice is gone.

If true, that's a mess. There go both projected starters for the Guard Spots. If I had to guess, I'd say they'll end up moving some of the tackles inside to cover the position, depending on how players grade out in the spring.

Yeah that sucks. Rice and Hughes gone? If I had to guess the OL will look like this in August:

LT Chauncey Briggs (SO)
LG Daniel McCarty (SO)
C Taylor Lasecki (JR)
RG Kris Weeks (JR)
RT Seaver Myers (SO)

I'm not sure about McCarty getting in there as a de-facto starter, but we don't exactly have a lot of options. I don't know how much more value he'll add than say, incoming freshman Evan Brown moving over from Center.

I was really hoping we were past the point of tossing underclassmen out there and praying.

What is the reason for Rice transferring?

What about Travis Fister and the big kid from San Diego that has been injured? They could provide some depth. Also Jerry Saena.

Taylor Reich from San Diego is the other tackle you're thinking of. Chase Walling and Christian Holloway are other guys who could compete for playing time. I'd imagine Evan Brown and/or Hyder may see the field as true freshmen as well.

Myers was very highly regarded coming out of HS...would be nice if he could live up to the hype and crack the starting rotation next year, and move Weeks inside to OG.

I think this is spot on and I think its a servicable OL, but we have zero depth. If one guy goes down we are in trouble.
