I do think we are better but dont kid yourself into thinking there is a line of candidates knocking on our door. Mack would be a huge improvement, the influx of talent alone would be unreal. College is all about recruiting and everyone knows he can recruit.
Well he could recruit to UT, but then one would have to be dead to not be able to recruit to UT.
Look at what he did at UNC, I know, really easy to win and recruit there when he was there. Love how some people get ZERO credit for the job they have done. Mack and Fulmer's resume is better than probably 95% of all college coaches, but yet they can't manage a team, it was their assistants, they had a bad season with NFL talent on the team, ect. There are very few of these proven guys out there. There are a ton of up and coming guys. For every Malzahn there are dozens of Bennetts. Amazing that Chad Morris perceived as less of a risk than Mack. He has higher upside, but with a much lower downside as well. Experience (and some of the older posters can probably chime in here) is not something to take lightly.
We would be crazy to discount those guys. They should be in the mix. Ultimately I'd love Chad Morris as HC. And I think the second best scenario (although highly unlikely) would be something like we have done in Bball with someone like Mack and a head coach in waiting (up and coming assistant).
And for every Nick Saban there are dozens of Ron Zooks. But name 5 or more retread coaches that have had success after having resigned or gotten fired? I guess by your theory Bob Stoops would not have been hired at OU. In fact OU hired a retread coach in Schnellenberger then realized their mistake and went to Stoops who was a coordinator at the time. In fact, I think you have more coordinators succeed than retread coaches.

Re: Latest coaching rumors
So Morris would leave the OC position at Clemson to take the OC position at SMU? Now that's funny.

He'll pick up a NC ring or two at Bama then hop into another P5 job.

The first thing I would want to know about Mack before hiring him is does he know how difficult the SMU job will be. The last thing we need is another SOB in here without any idea about what he's gotten himself into.
That is definitely a question I would be trying to answer as I interviewed every potential coach, not just Mack.

I believe that was initially a joke and or a dream list with no possibility. Lighten up francis. We all know Morris isn't coming here to be an OC.

Pete Carroll
Lou Holtz
Jeff Fisher (Rams are going to take awhile)
Steve Spurrier
Fox at Denver hasn't done too bad
Mora at UCLA
I don't think Rich Rodriquez deserved to be fired by Michigan in the first place
Frank Solich at Ohio
Bill Belechiek(sp)
Larry Coker
Tommy Tuberville
Barry Switzer
And of course...
June Jones did okay at Hawaii
Brown won everywhere he was a head coach - Tulane, North Carolina, Texas. Only question is how hungry is he.

Look at the resumes. Yes Schnellenberger won a championship in Miami. But if you begin to compare resumes he matches up more to Chizik than Brown or Fulmer. Those two have an incredible record where they were not just good one or two seasons, but more like a decade of being good/great at their respective schools. These types of candidates don't come along very often if ever and normally don't try to get back into coaching because they are legends at elite national programs. My guess is neither Mack nor Fulmer would actually want or take the job. So don't worry about it. I'm simply saying we could do a whole hell of a lot worse and to not simply dismiss them.
Now hopefully Chad is willing to hilltop and turn things around.

Thank you for compiling that.
Agree. How hungry is he? But the dude knows how to win.

5 college coaches that resigned or was fired from college and went to another college to succeed. I should have been more specific. Waiting on that list. Brown would love to have 3 or 4 years to rebuild while getting paid 2 mil to run a loose ship. Nobody is waiting in line to get him or Fulmer so I guess SMU should just jump om him.

That question alone is reason enough not to hire him especially considering how things went down with the last guy.

Re: Latest coaching rumors
I'm literally STUNNED that any SMU fan would complain about hiring a coach with the kind of winning pedigree of Mack Brown. A decade of 9 plus win seasons, countless guys in the NFL, one national title, another national title game appearance, recruiting classes that consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation,
Did it end poorly at Texas? Absolutely. The last few years at Texas were a disaster, but I personally don't believe that all of that lands at the feet of Mack Brown. If he were here at SMU we would instantly be a player for top level talent in Dallas FROM DAY ONE. He would assemble a staff full of coaches that have Dallas and Texas ties that would kill it on the recruiting trail. You don't have to be an X's and O's genius to win The American. But you can damn sure win it with a team full of Dallas high school studs.
Also, if you think a coach like Mack Brown is happy with the way things ended at Texas you are dead wrong. He's a football coach. If you listened to his comments in the last few days he has been less than subtle that he wants another opportunity. He wouldn't be doing a money grab like Jones. Mack has more money than he knows what to do with. He wants an opportunity to do it one more time. As other have said he won at freaking Tulane and then at UNC (basketball school). He rejuvenated the Texas fanbase and made them into a year in and year out powerhouse.
I still have Chad Morris as my favorite, but if we were somehow lucky enough to hire Mack Brown I would say Rick Hart, the CoC, RGT, etc. have hit an epic home run that will make SMU football relevant into the next decade.

As you can see it's a pretty short list and thin on major accomplishments.
