Very interesting article that was posted tonight on the DMN. Definitley a suitable hire IMO. Some people may have reservations because of the controversy that surrounded him at Colorado, but after 20 years of football futility at SMU, do we really have anything to lose by taking a chance with this guy? He is undoubtedly ready to get back into coaching and eager to prove himself again. The fact that he took Northwestern (the Baylor/Vanderbilt of the Big Ten) to the Rose Bowl speaks volumes about his coaching ability. His hiring would certainly make a splash with the national media and attract attention to the program, which couldn't hurt.

Talked to a couple of friends here in Phx. When I said Gary Barnett was interested in the job, one said, "they can't afford it". I said SMU has the $, his reply was, "I wasn't talking about that". The other said. "Well, he's a great coach, SMU wants to win don't they"? So I guess if he can explain the past well enough to get through the committee, go for it. One misstep and it could bring the sky down.

So the boy used wine, women and song to attract teenaged hyper testosterone athletes. Wow, who would have ever guessed that young men could be easily lured by such temptation!

Orsini know best what we need and who best fits that role. But enticing a few athletes with women isn't exactly unheard of. And if he did the same to attract alumnus into supporting the program, well, that is a powerful possibility as a fund raiser.

Again, it was the football players that took recruits to strip clubs. Barnett says he didn't know that was going on, but took responsibility for it, as he should have. His primary sin at Colorado was the chick kicker that he ran off the team. That is the politically incorrect thing that our faculty will not appreciate.

We are reminded of the things "our faculty" does not "appreciate", but exactly what is it that they DO appreciate??? Anyone? Anyone?

I think his primary sin at Colorado was the 70-3 blowout loss to UT.

UT used to have the Texas Angels. They were a group of female students who "helped with recruiting tours" according to an old article:

I remember seeing a similar program at SMU a while back, but don't remember its name.

Looks like the NCAA has cracked down on this practice, primarily in response to allegations/reports that Colorado "plied" its recruits with alcohol and grex:

This candidate is similar to a number of impact coaches in the CUSA, an ex-BCS coach with baggage looking for a new start. 8)

Colorado has really been a world beater since his departure, not. Maybe he left the cupboard bare, but he sure built Northwestern out of nothing. Let me just say, that we could do worse.

Barnett has become my favorite for the position. The guy has the most skins on the wall and has done it at a similar environment.

interesting comment from orsini about this

he came into the daily update for an interview the other day and asked anyone if they had any ideas for a new coach. when the laughter died down, someone said Gary Barnett. he smiled and said: "that's a good idea. he's a good man, and i will keep that in mind"
