Steve Sabol and NFL Films Presents is doing a feature on SMU, its greatest teams and the death penalty. It's on ESPN right now. Don't know if it's a repeat or not, but it's a good way to kill an hour.

It helped in killing the last 18-20 years.

I caught the tail end of it.
Would have been a great piece if we were finally going back to a bowl...... I bet Espn was thinking that was going to be the case when they move forward with it.

On a bright note. THE most important season is now the off-season. Coach Vic and the strength and conditioning staff has done wonders with the young players with adding a training table to the program. For a 1-10 team, they were very close to winning most of them with very young talent. The players are still working hard in the weight room and are excited about what they can become. Coach Vic may be our best hire this season.

The 2 things I thought that were interesting were Bennett's quotes. How his friends told him this was a coaching graveyard, and in spring practice in '01 how he said to himself "Oh God, what have I done?"
Not to be negative, but at some point don't you think it's pretty likely that whoever we bring in here is going to have the same thoughts running through his head? Obviously we can't change that until we brake the mold, and bring someone in who truly turns this thing around.
I long for the day that the HC job at SMU is looked on as a great job in college football.

That is exactly why we need someone like Gary Barnett or even Steve Kragthorpe. We need someone who has been through a situation like this and has faced doubt and doubters and overcome the challenge. As much as Applewhite and Turner Gill may look like shooting stars to many of you, they would probably react just like Bennett. Barnett would have the same fears, but would have the reassurance that this is no different from what he faced at Northwestern and he will overcome the challenge successfully!

As much as I hate to say it...you could say the same thing about Fran, ala TCU. He took over a 1-10 team and next thing you know they are going bowling.

Or we need one stud like LaDainian Tomlinson

He was part of that 1-10 team too. Needed a coach that knew how to properly utilize him...maybe. But yes, that would be a big help too.

While Bennett was publically stating that he would immediately compete for conference championships I clearly stated that SMU's talent was quickly nosediving based on the past 2 1/2 Cavan recruiting classes-and I might add I was getting BLASTED on here for not realizing that the ONLY thing keeping us from winning was Mike Cavan. Never trust the public statements of Coaches, Players or SIDs. For all the genuises like SMUer and Pony94 -we shall see the same scenario play out with respect to the Defense and most likely to Offensive Line in coming years with the new Coach. SO LET IT BE WRITTEN SO LET IT BE DONE.

Unless of course the new coach brings in some JUCO or transfer help to fill the voids...right? Hopefully the next coach will be able to do that...somehow. (See Stal...I've been paying attention.)

I hope this Bible-speak doesn't become a favorite...
