Steinberg calls back

Here's the deal, according to Leigh Steinberg, June Jones' agent:

Jones is undecided. Hawaii has made a tremendous 11th hour push to try to sway Jones to stay, including a third, increased offer.

Things are quite fluid. Stay tuned. There may be a resolution tonight. Part of the problem is that Hawaii is four hours behind us.

Here's some other details of what went on during Jones' visit, even while Hawaii made its best effort to try to keep Jones:

Jones' meeting with SMU president R. Gerald Turner went extremely well, Steinberg said. Jones had lunch at booster Gerald Ford's house with Ford and Carl Sewell, the chairman of SMU's board of trustees.

The meeting with the search committee also went well.

Jones had dinner with a large group of SMU boosters tonight at Nick & Sam's. Many SMU folks had flown in from around the state.

"The SMU part of it wasn't hard at all, that was very positive," Steinberg said.

But will it be enough?

I know this is big for him and all but enough is enough..... time to be a man and make a call. We have done what we said we would. They have not. Lets get on with it or not.

Just sign with us already you bastard. They will never make a commitment to football! Then can't even make a commitment to the US with that disgusting British union jack in their flag. Might as well try to coach their soccer or rugby teams.

If all of the SMU stuff is great and he's still trying to get more money from UH instead of taking our offer then what the [deleted] can we possibly do at this hour...

I really thought it was going to happen.

They have lied to him for 9 years. I hope when it comes down to it he realizes this is all a mirage and empty promises.

I think we're going to get hosed. And furthermore, I think Jones is crazy to agree to stay in Hawaii if they bungled the deal as badly as advertised. But I really have a terrible 4th quarter 2007 feeling. So much for 2008 being a better year. If we lose Jones, the bad luck continues.

Because it is only 6pm there. They are hoping we'll go to sleep and they can seal the deal.

Because Steinberg's already in his jammies watching Elmo. No more negotiating tonight.
