everyone crushes the staff for the preception that they aren't bulding relationships with coaches or are ignoring our backyard, but seems to me that these camps are a great tool to attrcat kids who might not have the means to make it up to Dallas.

Of course, it is camp season and the schools have camps at certain locations. Everybody is probably starting this week.

I think we all applaud these camps when they started 2 years ago. However, last year the recruiting services who covered these camps commented on several occassions there seemed to be "very few recruitable athletes" at 2 or was it 3 of the stops. You got to do your legwork, groundwork and homework to peak interest kids in those areas to make them work. I think the first year was thought to be a resounding success-the Rickey Collins WR at Tyler John Tyler was I think a great find but he never qualified. They also found a seldom thrown to receiver in Kennen Holman at the next stop. The second year I think was considered a disappointment.

Well, you don't quit doing them after 2 years because of one bad year. I would suspect that TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and A&M have their camps off site. And all of these schools will continue to have them.

In regards to your groundwork, homework comment, I think it's safe to say that these camps are for both 2012, 2013 and beyond.

yes they have multiple classes. Every school has them now including schools like NTSU and UTEP. Even Oklahoma St has camps around Texas, Its pretty much Standard Operating Procedure these days. I'm not sure there is a Texas school that doesn't have them. Not sure about Rice.

Interesting article in today's Post-dispatch regarding Mizzou's coach Gary Pinkel, high school football camps, and supposedly the nation's top recruit, Dorial Green-Beckham from Hillcrest High School in Springfield, MO. Apparently Mizzou holds camps in Springfield, Kansas City (already held), Columbia (two day camp in full pads) tomorrow and Saturday, and St.Louis on Sunday. All Pinkel would say is that they have held these camps for several years (time unknown). Said at their first camp in Springfield they had 50 "players" and this year they have 343 (article said players are Freshman on up). Pinkel felt they might recruit 10 of these players. It also said the coaching staffs of Missouri State, Missouri S&T, and Lincoln University (all state schools in MO) were in attendance at the camp.

Regarding the receiver, Dorial Green-Beckham, it said he has 20 Division 1 scholarship offers as of now. His stats are, 6'6'', 220lbs., 40yd.- 4.43, 2010- 100 meter state champ (time unstated).

"you got to do your homework?" when? aren't these camps open and not invitational only? you are building relationships with coaches, getting local exposure, etc., and its a wide net. sure, you would be encouraging kids you want to recruit to come. but if you think you are going to get the top 50 kids in texas to your camps, then you really aren't doing your homework.

"very few recruitable athletes" = "very few athletes rated highly by Rivals or Scout"? ...like Keenan Holman?

Aren't you proving his point by citing a single player? Not jumping in to take a side, but really, when someone says there were very few of an item at a store, and you say you found one, isn't that reinforcing the point he was trying to make?

I believe that Dorial visited UT this past weekend.

It was an example and not meant to be proof. Data set's too small to prove anything at this point but there are other plays (Kevin Pope, the others listed on multiple Reinebold posts) who look to be real players with limited or no offers. There are plenty of others who will offer proof going forward in guys like Rishaad Wimbley who had very limited or no offers. I'll go on the record saying I'd prefer that the staff recruit off "lists" rather than picking guys w/o offers. I think it's possible the staff does it to prove they can. That being said, I've been surprised at some of the talent they've found that didn't have other offers (Taylor Reed for instance though I don't know if he went through camps - he's one guy but there are lots like him on the team).
