Former Highland Park cornerback Blake Poston will walk on at SMU in 2011.
Poston (5-9, 180, 4.56) had 10 interceptions (three of which he returned for touchdowns) and "65+" tackles in his senior year, and also blocked five field goals. He was named first-team All-State (4A) by the Texas Sports Writers Association and Associated Press, and first-team All-Area (by rivals.com). Poston said he has bench pressed 280 pounds, squatted 500 and has posted a 35-inch vertical jump.
Poston said he also had offers to walk on at UCLA and Texas, but chose to stay closer to home to play for the Mustangs.
"SMU just seemed a better fit for me to play football," Poston said. "Also, I have heard a lot of good things about Coach (June) Jones and I'm excited to play for him."

That is an incredibly strong bench and squat for a little high school corner. Sounds like a good solid football player as production can't lie.

Agreed - if those numbers are accurate, that's a hell of a walk-on candidate.
I expect it was his size that cost him a chance to get any scholarship offers. If he's 5-9, he needs to run a legit 4.4, preferably faster. The idea that a guy that size (and age) can squat 500 is amazing.
Congratulations, Blake. Welcome to SMU.
Thanks for the update, PP.

Looks like a great addition to the team.
Won't hurt to have a solid local player from HP either.
Welcome.

Could be a good special teams player pretty quick with a 35" vertical leap and the blocked kicks he has had in high school.

Good call on special teams - anyone remember Ted Barnhart?

Rivals has a story on its message board about a darn good looking preferred QB walkon prospect coming this fall. Video looks pretty darn polished and he's won a lot of football games

Ted had a great breakout season on special teams. Too bad Phil ran him off, and he ended up finishing his football career at Trinity University.

Trinity is a good school, so not sure this comment is relevant.

Reminds me of James Klein who walked on at SMU. Ted Barnhart was a beast of athleticism we could only hope he's that good
