SMU is off to a 5-1 start for the first time since 1986, a year before the NCAA canceled the Mustangs' 1987 season as part of its "death penalty" punishment for rules violations. The Mustangs routed Central Florida 38-17 on Saturday in a rematch of last season's Conference USA championship game.

SMU quarterback J.J. McDermott completed 20 of 31 passes for 358 yards with two touchdowns. UCF was the only FBS team that hadn't allowed a touchdown pass this season before facing the Mustangs.

Nice to get consistent good pub. Hopefully this season will erase the DP references.

The DP references will never be erased. Period. It will always be mentioned and it's just something we are going to have to live with.

And they'll keep referencing it as we keep reaching levels if success we have not enjoyed since then.

some of this is positive to me. they keep referencing these great achievements, like 5-1 and saying we haven't done this since being handed the ultimate penalty - for cheating to get great talent. well, now we have great talent w/o cheating like so many others are doing these days.

Due to the 30for30 Thad piece, the DP is our legacy, and it 'almost' has a positive spin on it. People born after 1980 now know us for that dark period, but they are also more aware of our recent success. We must embrace the DP thing. It's never going away.

You can't chock that up to Pony Excess, at least not completely... It shed a lot of light on what actually happened, but a lot of people knew about the DP before Pony Excess.

Students, yes. Any kids outside of SMU, mostly no. The good news is we are winning our lost generation of fans back, one at a time.
