Big East Television Rights

I think HBPD had something about this the other day. Big East was trying to lock everyone in by forcing schools to grant their tv rights to the conference (like B1G and Pac-12) before Pitt and Syracuse left. Commish says they will do so again after realignment settles down.

While this would be good for SMU from a stability standpoint, it does mean that it would make it difficult to make any other conference moves in the future. As I understand the way it works in the Pac-12, if a school left for another conference, their tv money from the new conference would still go to the Pac-12 for the next 20 years...or something to that effect. So if SMU makes this move and everyone grants their tv rights to the conference, it would essentially be a permanent move...or at least a very long term move.

I believe it means the TV rights remain with the old conference. So, if SMU was to move from BE to the Big 12, every home game we play would be televised (or not, to spite us) by the TV partners of the BE.

This is always negotiable and I'm sure a team could pay the BE to buy back their rights.
