Best matchup: Southern Miss rush offense vs. SMU rush defense. Southern Miss leads Conference USA and is 19th nationally in rush offense, averaging 212.8 yards per game. As productive as Southern Miss' passing attack has been (262.7 ypg, 14 TDs), SMU would rather QB Austin Davis take to the air. SMU needs to find a way to stifle the Golden Eagles' rushing attack. In a loss to Marshall, Davis threw for 309 yards but Southern Miss was held to just 75 rushing yards. SMU is 12th nationally in rush defense, allowing just 89.5 yards per game. SMU has shut down the rushing attacks of Texas A&M, TCU and UCF (a combined 273 yards on the ground) and now needs to do the same to Southern Miss. LB Taylor Reed is SMU's best run-stuffing 'backer, so he needs to be active.

Best way for us to shut down the rush is score early and force them to air the ball.

Two early touchdowns is best weapon.

Not sure where the writer got his numbers from:

Per ESPN's Box Scores:
Rushing Yards
TAMU - 212
TCU - 150
UCF - 110

I'm not too smart but my math shows we have given up a total of 472 on the ground to those three teams not 273.

How about: since aTm SMU has only allowed an average of 65 yards rushing per game.

I figured he had meant either UTEP or NWLA rather than A&M.

Got you. Just trying to figure out where the author got the fact that we "shut down the rishing attacks of Texas A&M". I don't think giving up 212 on the ground is shutting them down.

With that said, A&M has the best RB we will face all year. Hell, they may have the best 1-2 combo in the country. They are just allergic to 2nd halves. USM for all their talent, does not equate A&M. Especially when we are staring down the 3, 4, 5, 6 RBs on their depth charts. I suspect we can hold them to under 300 on the ground.
