Ok. Now that we've been in the news alot, we need to make a push to get news outlets (mainly ESPN) to refer to us as SMU, not Southern Methodist. I think TCU did something similar in the past. I have zero idea how to go about this.

Could not agree more. We better officially claim it before someone else does (southern miss, southern Missouri, etc...)

Nothing. I make the point because its about continuity. Do you tell people you went to SMU or Southern Methodist? I'm sure 90% of us say SMU.

branding matters - we need to assert ourselves and say SMU only

Because 3/4 of the country does not know who Southern Methodist is. But about half know who SMU is. I have literally told 20+ people in Texas that I went to SMU and they had no idea where or what it was. Had I said Southern Methodist they really would not have a clue. At least when I said SMU I could say "well you know what TCU is right? Well it is about that size But in Dallas and a better school"

I dont know I mean its both for me, I wear shirts that say SMU on one line and the next is Southern Methodist University. I mean I like saying the full name, much like my fraternity KA, where I like saying Kappa Alpha Order. Either way its not a big deal, I identify both with SMU and its full name. I think you can still brand yourself either way, but yeah theres no doubt that people outside of Texas dont have a clue what it stands for. I think for sports its better to go with SMU and for academia to go with its full name.

If you are in any state that starts with a "M", most people who are not educationally driven, will quizzically look at you, if you say to them, that you went to SMU. They think, Southern : MN, MD, MS MI, MN, MO, MT., or derivatives thereof. Usually I have to say Southern Methodist in Dallas, or SMU in Dallas. Dallas is always the key.

I say SMU -Southern Methodist University. That way, I'm real clear with them where I went to school and they know its real name.
