Penn State and the Recruitment of Craig James

I recall Craig James talking about his recruitment out of highschool, and the illegal / backroom / bend-break the rules crap that Penn State was doing in pursuit of him. Does anybody recall that story / conversation? I can' stand PSU, especailly after the "we love Joe Pop" eastern media gave a one loss PSU our National Champioship in the early 80's. The James story, our ripped off national championship, PSU's decades of self righteous behavior, and now this..I say cook the bastards!

They bought their tickets.
They knew what they were getting into.
I say, let'em die.

Weren't they the ones who complained loudly back in the early 80's that SMU was entering their market to illegally recruit players. We got some big lineman( Stopperich ) out of the Pittsburgh area as I recall that sent them screaming to the press.

Paterno was a guest on the national tv shows like the Today Show, etc, on Jan 2 shamelessly making his pitch that Penn State had to be crowned the national champions and that there really was no way a sane person could feel otherwise. The sanctimonious shill. What a jerk. Didnt even have the sportsmanship to congratulate SMU on an undefeated season.

Stopperich is big drug addict doofus, biggest mistake SMU ever made, and I believe Dickerson said do not recruit this guy. Like what the hell did we need him for. Anyways I want Penn State to burn in Hell where they belong.

Believe your referring to Staley (a Linebacker) from the south Texas area, not Stopperich. Stopperich brought his family with him down to Dallas because his father was unemployed, and was getting (given) a job in big D.

"Pony Excess" covered this in detail. SMU arranged for SS's dad's job and paid serious cash. The documentary implied that once we went up North and started bringing down recruits from PA that the NCAA got a phone call "from a prominent program."

Yip, and Stopperich got us sent on probation.
I was at the Freezing cold and wet Cotton Bowl win over Pitt, I was even on camera after the game right behind The losing coach Fazio, flashing my " [deleted] on Pitt" button... And then we get screwed in the polls by Pitts cross state rivals...man was I pissed.

The same members of the press who voted PSU the national championship that year as a "tribute to Joe Paterno", were the first to take out their knives when this news dropped. Now I know why Newt Gingerich hates the press. And the sad fact is in this case, that Joe Pa just couldn't see what was right before his eyes, due to his friendship with Sandusky. I guess Happy Valley isn't going to be called that for some time.

Things are even more complicated because an number of former players including Matt Millen were on the board of Sandusky's foundation. In addition, JoPa has always had a big heart for charities libraries and supporting his current and former players. I am not defending him, but rather, pointing out that his charitable interests and personal loyalties, which are normally strengths of character, worked against and conflicted him in this matter.

I was a little sympathetic towards Paterno's situation but just found out he had all the gory details of what the student asst. coach reported and only kicked it upstairs. He deserves much worse than he is going to get. He is one big hypocritical SOB.

paterno stole our nc in 82 with paterno crying like a baby to the press. haven't had any respect for him since then. just another low life pretending to be a good guy.
this is not 100 times worse than our dp. there is no comparison. how do you compare paying college players versus abuse of children.
the spineless ncaa will not do anything to psu.
it is a criminal matter. the state has the power of supoena. hopefully all their dirty laundry will come out.

I just read that Penn State's sports are second in profit to Uof TX. They will pay millions to the victims, as they should.
Hated PSU ever since they stole out national championship and met the most obnoxious alumnus.
How about the students rioting? What a bunch of low lives. Football is more important to them then sincere sympathy for the victims. PSU is scum.

Driving home from church today listening the parade of ex PSU players (Mark Robinson, Kyle Brady, to name a few) extolling the "lesson learned, values taught, lives changed, wisdom recieved, etc., etc., etc" from this great man and leader, Joe Paterno....I say [deleted]!! Stop the spin, lies and protection. This is quite possibly the most outrageously damning story of abuse and cover up I have ever witnessed. The "cover up" continues...shameful, shameful stuff!
