Jin Hopkins is truly one of SMU's great history-not anthropology-professors-I consider him one of the Top 3 I ever had-but in 1987 at an all school debate on the future of SMU athletics he got up and suggested that SMU drop Football and instead field a rowing team and have regattas at White Rock like when he attended Oxford. From Day 1 this was an attack by a segment of this school on the heritage and tradition of the school.

I'm not that old-I graduated in 1981-but I've been following SMU Football since I was about 4 years old because my Mother was the head of the SPANISH Department among other things-but I'd like to point out she rarely missed a game for about 30 years since the Spanish Department is taking some shots here today.

The entire tutoring center is housed in Ford. Ford is not just used for only 6 FB games. Apparently prof is clueless about athletics and her own students. Seems like the same cliche counter argument they always look to add to a sports article to make it seemed "balanced."

Jim Hopkins went to Cambridge, not Oxford. If you had ever punted on the Cam, I don't think rowing regattas would come to your mind. His bio tells us he matriculated from O.U, attended Cambridge, and receive his PHD from UT. I guess he's embarrassed where he achieve his Masters as it isn't listed. He and his wife sound like a couple of pieces of work. If you look at their SMU blurbs they come off as pompous a$$holes. So glad Pye encouraged and drew these type of individuals to teach and do research at SMU. They come off as pseudo intellectuals. Don't mean to rant, but am tired of these people who wouldn't like to see us become another Stanford.

The profs sounds like pointy-head academia morons.
For some reason there is a contingent of people at SMU who think it's either or when it comes to academics and athletics.
It can be both.

Professors that think it is either them or athletics are ones that cannot generate their own grants/funds.

I wonder if any of these "brilliant know it all" teachers realize how much positive p.r. the players generate for SMU? Not just for what happens on the field but what they do through out the community.

Not to mention the donations. I like what Steve Orsini says about college athletics being the front-porch to the college experience.
