NCAA to Probe Penn State Over Abuse Scandal

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The NCAA has told Penn State it will investigate the school in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal that has shocked the campus, and cost its former president and coach Joe Paterno their jobs.
NCAA president Mark Emmert sent a letter to Penn State president Rod Erickson saying that the governing body for college sports will examine "Penn State's exercise of institutional control over its intercollegiate athletics programs" in the case of Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator accused of serial child sex abuse.
Penn State released the letter Friday.

i think they had GREAT institutional control.
1. they kept this secret for 20 years.
2. the athletic dept had complete control over the institution.

Institutional control is what most people thought they could get Penn St on. Will be interesting to see what kind of punishment is doled out.
NCAA doesn't even have to do any work - just sit back and read the papers everyday with the latest revelations.

The fact that a recruit claimed Sandusky was out recruiting him may be a problem for them. He had emeritus status and an office in the athletic department. Hard to claim he was not representing the university attending high school games...even if he was really there for other reasons.

Will the NCAA actually take down a large state school? Penn and CMU don't offer scholarships for football, so that can't punish them instead.

Penn and Penn St not the same. One is Ivy League, no scholarships. They could go after Pitt though!
