4 kicking game gaffes, 5 turnovers = SMU win. What?

Kicking game gaffes:

1. Miss an extra point
2. Bad snap on a chip shot field goal that we miss
3. Punt hits a player in the leg/foot
4. Can hang onto the onside kick (I realize Reed got blasted)

5 turnovers including:
1. Fumble return for a TD
2. Pick deep in our territory sets up another td

I don't know what this shows. Either the SMU talent was good enough to overcome it (I guess that's it) or Rice was just awful enough not to take advantage.

Either way, you can tell the defense has played very well the last couple of games.

Glad SMU won but this is a product of bad physical and mentral preparation and discipline from the coaching staff and the players taking it upon themselves to do this. If your program is going to take the next step, you can't keep beating yourself.

I view today as a sign of progress.
This game had all the hallmarks of a classic SMU meltdown.
Yet, we managed to hang on and win.
BCS title game worthy? Nope.
Improving on where we have been. Yes.

It shows that Rice has a really really bad football team

I view this as a completely predictable George C. Marshall post...

I don't view this as progress but rather a common theme this year. SMU has beaten bad CUSA teams often with similarly bad stats like this one, all reflective of the inept QB play and offensive production. I'm concerned we come out and look bad in the bowl game against a decent team.

I guess I'm agreeing that the talent is miles from where it was but still has a ways to go and we wont be able to do anything in this offense without good QB play.

Not rocket science. We're a pretty good team right now, not a great one.

GO MUSTANGS!

I guess we're watching different football teams. Good should not be associated with this team. Decent or average but far from good.

I concur with the senator from Kentucky.

7-5 (8-5 would be awesome).

Unexpected losses: Navy and Tulsa.

Unexpected wins: TCU and (maybe) UCF.

All in all, this is where I thought we'd be record-wise.

Limping into bowl game. Let's be honest, Rice is not very good. Should have won by 20 at least.

Anyway, I'll take it. I expect next year will be even better (USM, Tulsa, and UH will not be as good and we will be better). And, if we stay in CUSA one more year, I think we dominate it in 2013. IMHO. Would prefer to get in the BE in 2014 when I think we'll really be ready for it (with much press entering it after dominating CUSA).

Walking into a bowl game. No shame in what we've done this year.

Fortunately we only had a couple of "solid" football teams on our schedule and we managed to beat one of them. For the most part, our oppontents were pretty much the bottom of the barrel with regards to quality.

we are not pretty good. we are average at best - and only average because our good D is compensating for our awful offense. This game was not a sign of progress - iif anything a step back from mid season - it was sloppy and disappointing. We have to get a ton better if we are heading into a better conference like the B.E and also a tough out of conference schedule.

we stink at what June is suppose to be great at. We need some introspection and we need to adapt quickly - time for the coach to figure out whats up.
