That theory by the Pitt writer is wrong. There is an agreement in place that in years that the Liberty Bowl does not take a CUSA team, the Compass Bowl will.

CUSA did fail to fill its spots in a couple of bowls, so the spots were filled through backup agreements. These bowls (and the teams) were:

New Orleans - San Diego State
Military - Toledo (CUSA was backup to Army, MAC was backup to CUSA)

The issue was that SunBelt did not have many spots. We have been there with the WAC. Our only winning season since the death penalty (at that time) and we missed out. It happens. The nice thing about CUSA has been the number of bowl arrangements.

We have been bowl eligible in CUSA and didn't get a spot...CUSA has gotten better since 2006

Were we in '06? I thought we had a 1AA win that didn't count back then. I cant remember though

You are allowed 1 per season for bowl eligibility purposes.

2006 results, 1-AA opponent was SHSU. Perhaps 6-6 teams were not eligible back then or CUSA did not have enough bowls.

cusa didnt have enough bowls...and we couldnt score on rice from the 1
