When SMU athletics seemed to still be in the business of marketing, they built their entire campaign around one man, June Jones. The "June Cometh, Pony Up" campaign was destined to fail from the start. When you build brand equity around a single individual, you are building your brand on sand, and not a solid foundation. The past four years, SMU's brand equity has been built around June. It was inevitable that one day he would leave, and with him leaving our brand would fall apart. We need to start a new campaign based on our solid tradition. The white helmets were an excellent start and I would credit that to Orsini with the "June Cometh, Pony Up" campaign. We need to start forming a new brand identity based around tradition and SMU. I don't know when June will leave, but when that day comes, our brand must be strong enough nationwide to get past the damage.

Other examples of brand equity built around June that is a brand equity hazard:

-crossbone helmet stickers
-black jerseys
-black SMU apparel in general
-red and blue lei's at the bookstore
-liberty and justice
-etc.


Note: On another note, the navy blue helmet and ugly Nike jerseys
we wore under Phil Bennett was one of the worst marketing moves in SMU history, in my opinion. Stay true to tradition. I do understand Coaches bringing in new traditions, but I believe they should be limited and made sure they are helping the brand, and not potentially hurting it!

I'll let you do that when you actually show up to a game, the Rice attendence was absolutely embarassing. I felt terrible for the kids, JJ's recruits, and the school. You all need to get your asses to all of the games next year.

If I had my druthers, we'd be pimping our history and nostalgia all the freaking time. If Dickerson, LeVias, Meredith and other highlights aren't on our football intro video, we aren't selling ourselves enough.

Along those lines, more amendments to JJ's contract:
*Blue jerseys
*No leis (or lies)
*No more public dissing of bowls in favor of Hawaii Bowl
*No more messiah complex
*No more dissing of Peruna or the Mustang Band
*No more Pied Piper crap with the players, turning them against Dallas and our fans.
*No more letters to newspapers from players
*No more whining about stadium lights or the wind
*No more references to the NFL without noting his head coaching record there
*No more Hawaii crap on the helmets
*return to weekly sit-down pressers with local media, like most every other FBS coach
*No more $500/plate dinners, $800/golf outings for the privilege meeting SMU greats and stoking JJ's South Pacific foundation
*No more boondoggles to American Samoa

Jones is here to win games, promote SMU and win Dallas over. That should keep him plenty busy.

It should be required all persons living on campus must attend all home games. Baylor makes student go to church every week for a semester, its a requirement to graduate. We should do the same.
