@darrenrovell: Scariest part of Penn State selling less than 3,000 tickets to bowl game? It's played in the 92,000-seat Cotton Bowl. Houston better show up

Ticket sales for bowl games are at an all time low this year. Probably due to airfare. Have you seen airline ticket prices the last few weeks? Although, you can't really blame Penn St fans for not being excited about a bowl game this year.

PSU fans historically travel as well as any team in the country. Problems started two years ago when PSU got very greedy and informed all of their season ticket holders that they must contribute $600 per ticket per year to the booster's club to maintain their prime tickets or they would be moved to end zone seating. I know at least 12 ticket holders who had upward of 6 season tickets each for more than 50 years and they all got incensed and cancelled their tickets and ceased all boster contributions. All PSU fans reacted the same and literally thousands of tickets were not bought this year. In addition PSU changed their ticket holder parking assignments ( some with reason based on new facilities constructed on previous football parking areas) and put people very far away in swampy fields requiring shuttle bus transportation to the stadium. These issues coupled with JoPa's limited offensive philosophy exacerbated 2 QB shuttle system the past 2 years had fans very critical of the program and really down on the program. To make matters worse they had Paterno's son Jay listed as the QB coach call all pass plays from the press box and offensive coordinator Galen Hall would call all running plays which caused the offense to have no rhythm. Imagine on every play having 2 coaches fight over the play call which resulted in very slow play calling and much criticism when plays were not successful. All of this was compounded by a highly rate frosh QB who can run and absolutely cannot throw and a walk-on QB who can throw but not run. Then throw in the Sandusky scandal and the firing of Paterno which results in little fan interest. Lastly, most PSU fans feel entitled based on their historic legacy and felt this bowl game was a giant step beneath their dignity and felt slighted about the bowl believing they deserved a better bowl. Hence, a very lethargic current fan base, saturated by the scandal, already down on Paterno on his offensive philosophy and very mad at the perceived greed and abuse by the PSU athletic department re tickets and parking. PSU will not travel this year. A text book case of a university that got greedy, believed they could bully fans and ticket holders with no recriminations, that they were better than everyone else with their sterling reputation, they did not need to listen and they would dictate to their own abuse. Now they have crashed and burned.

The biggest irony is that it is the Ticket City Bowl. When you are playing in a game that is sponsored by a secondary ticket market, can you complain that fans aren't buying tickets through the school?
